Nooo, did that game for a year, far too long. But I do still like to trade the markets when I get a free moment

I have a couple of companies, one of them mobile dev, the other data mining. RDBD come and work for me Too many "programmers" about these days. Actually I probably couldn't afford you

"Nooo, did that game for a year, far too long."

Burn the witch !!!

People sometimes ask why I'm not as viciously hostile about the financial meltdown as I usually am about these things. I reply that for all the w--ker bankers, the CDO stuff must have been written to a large degree by my peers.

The fact they couldn't even diagnostically determine the extent to which each black box was linked to USA subprime products, filled me with utter disgust.

"I have a couple of companies, one of them mobile dev, the other data mining."

Good luck with them.
Data mining : sort of thing I'd like to have a pub chat about what gets done in the field (rather than academic blurb) . I've done data analytics on telecoms networks, but that process is far more precise/inflexible than mining.

Actually, you should probably get pally with the Admins as they are doing kindred stuff (that bunch of s never replied to my email when I want to know about their telecoms billing sys work ) .

"Actually I probably couldn't afford you"

I do drop my rates if I covet the work, and the logistic costs allow it.

Cheers

I agree, we have a lost generation of brains to banking. I was invited to give a talk at IC a few years back, and they were citing the 35K starting salary post-graduation as the selling point of the course, sponsored by barclays or someone.

Just think of the great things we "could" have built

I'm approached by start-ups all the time now wondering what to do with exploiting the data on their 30 thousand users. I tend to ask them what useful commerical data they've actually got, when facebook has a ton of it, the answer is usually met with a blank.

We're leaning towards geographic data, can't say too much now or someone will google me

Imperial education, worth about 10 developers!! But yeah I need to land a big contract before we're hiring again.

"I tend to ask them what useful commerical data they've actually got, when facebook has a ton of it, the answer is usually met with a blank."

I've come across data analytics done for telecoms where the creators pride themselves on all the reams of analytics they can produce. Yet hardly ANY of it can be used as "actionable" input for the daily workings of operators.

"We're leaning towards geographic data, can't say too much now or someone will google me"

I've done a bit of geospatial work (WGS84 <-> cartesian) on algorithms. 2D mainly. Could go 3D if a former client gets some customers.

"Imperial education, worth about 10 developers!!"

And so you make an instant enemy in Mich.

Bah, my imperial affiliation trumps my Arsenal affiliation, and the guy I've been setting up businesses with for the past 10 years is a spur

Geospatial data is really cool, because if you've got a ton of it and you want to reason about things that are near to things you have to have efficient parallel algorithms to do it otherwise it will take a millenium

Are you looking for a new challenge atm?

"Are you looking for a new challenge atm?"

If something irresistable appears.
Otherwise I have the "bill money" and probably won't take work until January.

Actually, a client may want me to do some fixed price work.
I've just demolished an Oxbridge academics' NL algorithm they were banking on, in grand plan and fine detail to produce, with what is ostensibly a bit of O level 2D trig/geometry + linear algebra.

Also, if your lot know anything about doing decent nearest neighbour search algorithms on N dimensional vectors (N in [3,7] ) , let me know.

Anything that transitively makes the RDBD better, is immediately on the kill list for Mich.
