Pierre Nkurunziza (18 December 1964 – 8 June 2020) was a Burundian politician who served as the ninth president of Burundi for almost 15 years from August 2005 until his death in June 2020. A member of the Hutu ethnic group, Nkurunziza taught physical education before becoming involved in politics during the Burundian Civil War as part of the rebel National Council for the Defense of Democracy – Forces for the Defense of Democracy (Conseil National Pour la Défense de la Démocratie – Forces pour la Défense de la Démocratie, CNDD–FDD) of which he became leader in 2000.

The CNDD–FDD became a political party at the end of the Civil War and Nkurunziza was elected president. He held the post controversially for three terms, sparking significant public unrest in 2015. He announced his intention not to stand for re-election in 2020 and instead ceded power to Évariste Ndayishimiye, whose candidacy he had endorsed. He died unexpectedly on 8 June 2020 shortly before the official end of his term. He was the longest-ruling president in Burundian history.

Ross County moved out of the Scottish Premiership relegation places after their second win over Celtic this season all but ended their visitors' slim title hopes.

Jordan White's 71st-minute header hauled County up to 10th and added to their League Cup win in November.

Celtic dominated possession but created little on another dispiriting night for Neil Lennon's reigning champions.

They are left trailing Rangers by 18 points with eight games left.

That means Gerrard's side would guarantee the title with a draw in the Old Firm game on 21 March, should they win their next two games.

However, they could win it as soon as 6 March, if Celtic lose to Aberdeen next Saturday.

Bristol City have appointed Nigel Pearson as their new manager.

The ex-Leicester City and Watford boss, 57, has been without a club since parting company with the Hornets two games before the end of last season.

He has been chosen to succeed the sacked Dean Holden and take charge at Ashton Gate until the end of this term.

Pearson, who began his managerial career at Carlisle, has also had spells in charge of Southampton, Hull City and Derby.

The Robins lie 15th in the Championship, 10 points clear of danger, on the back of a run of seven straight defeats.

The first six of them led to Holden's sacking on 17 February. but their losing streak continued on Saturday under caretaker boss Paul Simpson at home to Barnsley.

Pearson is set to watch Tuesday evening's Championship match away at Middlesbrough before taking charge of Saturday's trip to Swansea City.

The chief executive of a live music trade body has said the industry is "at the back of the queue to re-open" once coronavirus restrictions are lifted.

The comments come after Prime Minister Boris Johnson set out his four-step plan to release England from lockdown.

Mr Johnson said on Monday he hoped step four would see the end of all legal limits on social contact.

But Greg Parmley, chief executive of Live, said his sector "could be months behind the rest of the economy".

"The chancellor must acknowledge our extended closure in the budget and provide the economic support needed to ensure the jobs and livelihoods of the hundreds of thousands of people that work in our industry exist as we come through this pandemic," he said.

The proposed step two, from no earlier than 12 April, could see the return of outdoor hospitality, including drive-in cinemas.

Step three, which would follow at least five weeks later, on 17 May at the earliest, could allow limited indoor mixing.
