I also don’t think we’ll get Wirtz. Just don’t seem like the sort of signing we make?
Who was the last “generational talent” that we bought?
Then again, I am a miserable git.

Barnes and Beardsley.

The amount they're asking has already been approved by us internally. It's working out whether we pay more of it up front or try to work it into add-ons.

Surely Suarez is a generational talent? Would have won the ballon d'or but for the Messi/CR era and was arguably playing at a level close to them for a period.
VVD is arguably the greatest CB of his generation. Certainly in the conversation anyway. Ditto Alisson.
Salah not considered a generational talent?
he means before we bought them, as in how the whole world fawned over there talent ala mbappe

We did not know, nor did the world know, just exactly how good he was until he was with us.
The only one I can think of who could be considered is Stan Collymore.
Torres was hugely sought after when we signed him.

Collymore was a huge signing at the time
Torres 100%.
He was captaining Atletico and starting for Spain at 19 years old.
I don't ever recall us going head to head with say Bayern / Madrid for a signing and winning though. Feels like we would always be second fiddle to those guys.
That's why Wirtz has always felt unrealistic. The fact that the finances are taking time to be agreed are the concerning bit.
Yeah Torres was a big one. Before that the biggest name I can think of is Morientes, was so disappointing how that turned out although he was probably past his peak by then.
Less so I know Joe Cole felt like quite a big coup when we got him too, as we were absolute shiite back then and there were a load of CL clubs in for him. What a disaster he was. Imagine getting sent off on your debut, can't even remember what he did to get a red for it.
Tbh it's only PL favouritism that didn't think Suarez was not world class before he joined us...or at least on the brink of it.
3 great seasons at Ajax, improving each year both statistically and his natural talent. He was a great player at international level as well.
People used to say the same about Neymar as well.

Agree. We also competed with Utd for his signature when they were at their peak, not the shambles of today.
I would absolutely have Suarez in there as well. He was scoring at a ludicrous rate for Ajax (49 in 48 games the season before we signed him), had CL experience, was scoring at a really decent rate for Uruguay. The world knew how good Suarez was.
VVD as well. CB aren't often seen as generational talents but there was a reason we paid a world record for a defender and had to beat City to his signature.

Great shout on VVD - we were up against City for him too.
Disagree on Suarez, people thought he was a real gamble coming from the Dutch league, particularly after Afonso Alves had a similar scoring record there and flopped so spectacularly just a year or two before.

Suarez was seen as a risk because of his discipline and the controversy surrounding him, not his talent.
He'd been banned for 7 games and stripped of the Ajax captaincy for the bite in one of their league games. And that was only months after the WC 2010 controversy of the handball against Ghana. A WC in which he was a stand out player btw.
Talent-wise the world knew how good he was.
Forgot about Joe Cole. I was made up when we signed him
