It's a chain reaction to prerequisites that were set previously tbh. Statistically shots on what they the stats guys call the "D-zone" always ranked higher and were more likely scored than shots taken from outside the D-zone

xG took it further to add value to these shots but also the manner in which they were created. If it's from a through ball played centrally then it ranked possibly as the highest.

Whereas a cross from the wing is sort of seen as more of an hopeful chance but obviously if you have an elite crosser in your team and pair him with an elite header than you know you're playing to your advantages.

We've seen the bad side of something like that though when Commolli had us whipping in 30+ hopeful crosses a game because the data said it takes around 30 crosses a game for a team to score a goal.
We also sorta have ourselves to blame because we chose to keep Suarez on the pitch for these crosses and kept Carroll on the bench

Stats guys calling things a D-zone is all we need to know.

Irish is now suddenly very into stats.

Did Downing cross the ball 147 times with no assist or something? It was a crazy stat either way.

What if our spending this season was a ploy all along for FSG to manipulate us into believing that spending large sums of money has an adverse affect on the team so we go back to accepting just one or two signing every season

I don't mind xG, feels overblown to reject it because of technical agreements on weightings or calcs etc, especially since those inbuilt weightings are likely based on hard data.

Case in point, that Caicedo shot - a few friends are critiquing him because he didn't closedown Caicedo, even though it was Mac that lost his man. That said, VVD was showing Caicedo to the left side of the goal and it would have needed a perfect shot to beat the goalkeeper. Unfortunately, he did hit it perfectly.

VVD probably did the right thing and the stats will prob show it was a hard goal to score but both look silly because it did go in

If you're using xG as a filter in a search for attackers who can score goals then yeah it's an amazing tool

Jadon Anthony, Thiago (Brentford), Richarlison, Wilson Isidor and Gyokeres all making the top ten of top xG strikers.

Yeah that's because they are scoring goals

not shocked, they all have 3 or 4 goals so far

We should go fir Richarlison in the summer

Well they’re all in the top ten of goal scorers so far so that makes complete sense…

I got it wrong anyway. Enzo Fernandez in 5th, Bruno 5th and Sesko 6th
