I don't think I knew (or if I did, I'd forgotten) that RM came in for Gerrard when Jose was manager there.

Really interesting throw-away comment from Gerrard about what they wanted him to do to force the move. Wish Rio had followed that up with a question! I assume it was either run contract down or kick up a stink.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah that bit was very interesting, he dropped a crumb for Rio that he didn't pick-up apparently. I don't really remember Madrid interest either but it was Mourinho so does seem to align given he tried at Chelsea too. Were Madrid getting players to run down contracts back then?

Also funny this dropped yesterday on Trent's birthday. Might give the interview a listen now actually
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah Stevie hinted that he was basically not prepared to do what Trent did to force a move. What a legend.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
But but but...
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Just because Stevie is a legend for choosing one path, doesn't make Trent the devil incarnate for choosing a different one. This isn't a Star Wars film.

Come on man you can't still be saying this surely? Sometimes there's just too much info and facts that you have to give over.

Stevie wasn't ready to run down his contract and twerk for Madrid like TAA.

Some of the signings we could have had back in the day though.

Weren't we after David Silva, Juan Mata, and David Villa at similar ish times? Villa and Mata or Silva in a team with Gerrard and Torres, with Alonso and Masch behind and you win the league.

Benitez would have been superb under FSG.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Agreed and all those players were willing to join us under Rafa too.

I'm not arguing against Stevie being a legend of the club. He's one of our 'Mount Rushmore' figures.

But there are shades of grey. Trent isn't necessarily the yin to Gerrard's yang. He'll just never be close to a club legend now. He sold that off to go to Madrid. His choice.

Hopefully a mood changer for Mo with 2 goals scored to send Egypt to the world cup.

So nice that we can now rely on Utd to lighten the footballing mood with some good news:
