There’s a campaign that now seems to be gaining some momentum called ‘Stop Funding Hate’

As Levinson etc have been unable to regulate the press, the Stop Funding Hate strategy is to hit the media in the pocket.

By persuading big corporations from ceasing advertising in the likes of the Sun, Mail, Express etc. Understand that the Co-op and Lego have recently announced suspension of advertising in the Mail and Sun.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's a start I suppose, but by all means it is not only the press. I see it on the BBC as well. Bias reporting constantly.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Agree.

On any given subject you could have different accounts from Sky News, BBC, ITV, and Channel 4

I think most sensible people get their news from numerous sources. Heard on the radio last night that there are people who rely on Facebook for their news. Bit mad that.

It was a piece about the fact that there are news outlets set up purely to make money from 'clicks' and advertising, so they literally just make sh-t up - so irresponsible. Although I did think of a number of posters on here when I heard about it

The BBC are pretty even handed in the way they feature politics.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Due to my background of Indian heritage, belonging to an arab community based religion with parents from Africa born and brought up in the west married an Indonesian. I can assure you that there have been plenty of times which BBC, ITV, Sky and many more have a complete and bias look into some of the areas. Take Syria or Iran for example, the west says something which is not entirely the whole truth according to the nation and their people. The reporters only show part of the issue from only one side distorting people's view. This is pure propaganda and it has not changed since Hitler days.

At least the BBC have a little more accountability when compared to others. In that as well as Ofcom they have an internal regulator.

If your not going to show the whole issue, and only take snippets to confirm your or the governments claim. That is propaganda.

TBH It would be pretty damn impressive if the BBC wasn't slanted towards western side of events.

We have our western framework of how the world is and who the good guys and bad guys are and even with the best will in the world western media will present the story in a context their audience will understand.

posted on 16/11/16

I'm not sure why heritage can make someone say what is more biased or not to be fair, as everyone is guilty of their own inherent bias anyway and see what they want to see.

I think in regards to the media it's important tio understand the outlets stance and where it sits.

Like you know the mail is more right leaning, the guardian more left, maybe that's too simplistic but you it's a base to work from.

If you're aware of the outlets leanings then you can read it knowing how it is likely to report. This can allow you take the information provided but with the understanding that it may well be trying to push a particular agenda.

Like I knew last Wednesday morning the Guardian would be in an uproar over Trump, and they didn't let me down by basically reporting armageddon had began

Like I already said, this is why people should source their news from various sources. It's really easy these days, and surely ironic that peope seem to be struggling all the more with it - I think people just don't read enough, see a hundred headlines and then consider themselves 'informed'. Dumb.

True it's why I like twitter so much, I control my timeline and get news from the various sources (right and left) that I want to read, and get to keep it mostly clear of cheap click bait links.

But like you point out many people don't read enough and the 147 characters in a tweet can be misleading allot of the time, I do generally read the article though

I can't tell you how many arguments I've had with people who only seem capable of reading the headline.

You point out the quotes in the article tell a slightly different story to the headline (which is obviously there to grab attention) and you just get them pointing out what the headline says again....

It's telling that news companies have been set up just to exploit this very thing. They KNOW people won't actually rad the articles but will put up their revenue by clicking through a load of bullsh-t.

I have found Twitter a good source of info. As well as following various news sources, you can follow the group/party/persons responsible that released the information.

It'd be a bit bleak if BBC did report the actual truth at times though.

'And today, for the fifth time this week another family was accidently killed by a drone's stray missiles intended for an ISIS canteen. The family lost the two parents, and eight children in their temporary home, in Aleppo, as their previous two had been blown up. The family lived in the hollowed shelter without food and hot water for four years, with the youngest having been just diagnosed with cholera due to dirty drinking water.

Now..... back over to you'

I think people could do with some genuine bleak. It would actually benefit society in the long run.
