The budget for the US police officer put in a league table of military spending on a per country basis would rank 4th in the world. And where does that money go? Into hardware, surveillance equipment and other things that are more useful to after the crime has been committed. The people who want to ‘defund’ the police just want that impossibly huge amount of money to be used in more preventative ways like for example rebuilding neighbourhoods, better jobs for people of colour etc.

It’s really not that bad an idea. Weirdly the right seem to hate it because they seem to like the idea of shooting away their problems rather than confronting the whys and wherefores.

If campaigning for the embargo to be ended defines an organisation as ‘political’ then the International Red Cross, Oxfam, American Association for World Health, Human Rights Watch, The Borgen Project, and many others can be added to the list.

Thorgen makes a ridiculous assumption that most people have the free time or energy to endlessly read pages and pages about each and every policy or idea. They're not dumb, they are just busy with their own lives. Slogans and summaries help for people who are not obsessed with politics.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No, the problem is that people assert that their own opinion is just as valuable or carries as much weight as the people who have taken the time to do the reading. And proceed to just dig deeper and/or lie about it when this becomes apparent.

People very rarely say, "Fair point, I didn't realise that" any more - online at least.

😂

It doesn't help matters that when people do change their mind they still get abuse. TBAB (Hi, TBAB if you're reading) changed his mind on his Brexit stance, but the remainers would accept it and slated him on flip flopping. 🤦‍♂️
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I've never understood why a political party or person changing their mind (u turning) gets such condemnation.

If somebody comes round to my way of thinking I regard that as a good thing. For example my missis isn't a big football fan but if pushed she would have said she was an Arsenal fan when I met her.

Having had the benefit of spending lots of time in my company she is now very much a Spurs girl and understands that although we'll never win anything it makes her a better person.

I suppose it boils down to why, or what caused the change of few.

The government for example has been *forced* to roll back on a number of occasions. Not because they wanted to but (as with everything Johnson says and does) because of widespread criticism. And wishing to be popular.

In regard to your other half I'm sure she is simply lying to herself, and cries herself to sleep at night at her betrayal

Defined the police! Defund the police!
(Signs huge dollar bill for more police protection)

----------------------------------------------------------------------
The bill, as I understand it, sets out proposals to invest in ..."more police officers, more nurses, more counsellors, more social workers or community violence interrupters to help resolve issues before they escalate into crimes"

Which is precisely what the 'defund the police' movement had been pushing for. To reallocate resources to include community support, more funding for social & youth services etc.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2021/06/29/continuing-gop-fiction-that-president-biden-supports-defunding-police/
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's not defunding the police then. In fact that's giving the police more money (funding more police officers), while also funding other things. Why do they shoot themselves in the foot like this. Why give such an obviously confrontational and ridiculous name to that idea?
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Who? BLM or the government?

Funny that I found this in your own twitter link

https://mobile.twitter.com/saedaaya/status/1412075196887019527

Defunding the police doesn't not necessarily mean less police or less money for police. Educate yourself.

Regular people don't know how much money govt has. The usual excuse for sending cops to social situations was always they there was no money to hire social workers and medical experts to send to those situations.

So people suggested taking some funds meant for police and getting people more suited to some of the jobs police have been doing. If they have enough money to support police and still bring in social workers and paramedics then thats great. Doesn't mean you hate police. Just saying sending police to some situations is not working and is asking for trouble. How many mentally ill people must police unnecessarily kill before this sinks in?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Shifting sands.

Defund the police was originally about taking money away from the police to invest in other areas - that's kind what defund means. 🤦‍♂️

Whilst allocating money for other areas is definitely a worth while exercise, reducing the police budgets isn't. More, not less police is what's needed.

Even though with other areas getting funding police work should be reduced, they are still (from what I've read) way understaffed, undertrained and over worked.

Defunding the police in any way is ridiculous, adding money and bringing in new services would be great too.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If you have the money then fair enough but if administrators say there is no money then available resources must be shared equitably. Paramedics and social and mental health workers also save lives.

You don't know or care what defund the police means, which explains this laughable attempt at making a point.

Self proclaiming stuff again. Congrats.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't think you know what self proclaiming means but I'll indulge you and say thank you very much.

I was trying to be modest but you've insisted so much that I think its time I accepted and hereby proclaim that I'm the greatest.

😂 You are so insecure. 🤣🤣

The need to feel superior to others is a major cause for people who put others down. Psychology says those who feel this need bully to knock others down.

By making another person feel small, a person who bullies feels bigger. They may feel superior in that they can assert their dominance over another person. It could also make them feel strong or powerful to beat another person down. This need comes from a lack of stability regarding this person's self-worth, and the bullying is simply a defense mechanism they have developed to shield themselves.

😭😭😭
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Being proven wrong is not bullying.

You should read about how bullies always play the victim card when you stand your ground. Always .

----------------------------------------------------------------------
The 'defunding the police' movement was not about completely stripping resources from police departments. But to reallocate funds to other areas *as well as" increasing the effectiveness of the police (training etc).

Terminology aside, it (on the face of it) looks like a positive measure.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Defunding the police is not a phrase that explains itself just by reading it.

You have to apply some level of critical thought and use mental calories to understand it and this is precisely why we see confusion on this issue from some of our right leaning brothers.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I agree with ttliv insofar as the use of the term ‘defund’ doesn’t do justice in representing what are excellent, evidence-based arguments with the potential to do great social good.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Its a matter of perception. Give them an inch they take a yard.

You must force them to use their brains. Allow this laziness of thought and next thing you know they tell you taking the knee means support for marxism.

If you need to feed someone you don't take food from the hungry.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
For me, that's exactly the point of "defunding the police". Stop taking money away from the poor to pay for more police to crack down on the poor. Spend that money on something that stops the poor needing to commit crimes to eat*, or you're just perpetuating the problem. Then you can set the police on to those "real crimes" that people bang on about when they get caught speeding.

*Obviously not all crime is done through necessity, but some of it really is. And in those cases police action invariably makes everything worse, and probably costs more.
