Bitcoin mining now uses more power than Argentina..
Honestly crypto just needs to fack off
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There is a town in upstate New York due south if Montreal. In recent years (decades?) the industrial base has disappeared along with the Air force base. As a result there are loads of empty houses and apartments.
A couple of years ago bitcoin miners moved in and rented loads of these properties. The problem is that in the US when an area uses more energy than estimated the cost of electricity rises. Leading to morebemoty properties.
All forvwhat is basically a tax dodge.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
its is disgusting, i know a minority of people have actually been made pretty wealthy by it, but honestly there needs to be some curbs on its power consumption, its growing exponentially.
Bet the Russians are loving it right now too.

Why would that matter out of interest?
The issue is that it creates a NEED for as much energy as a country, for something unnecessary, if we weren't "mining crypto" then that thermal and solar would instead be offsetting fossil fuels.
Crypto just isn't compatible with environmentalism, let alone the way it's facked up the market for computer parts.

Actually their power is exported, as data in 2017 they looked at laying a huge power cable to the UK too.
Problem is that in 2018 they were warned crypto mining power useage would exceed households, and it did.
The power mix there in 2015 was 100% renewables, it's since fallen to include 15% from fossil fuels, last year they even had to stop accepting new crytop mine applications due to a shortage of power, and the lack of power has slowed the number of data servers moving to Iceland to use said renewables.. Crypto took up all the slack, and then has overloaded their system. Forcing them to burn fossil fuels again.
I take it you are in to crypto? I see a lot of these myths floating around that it's mainly run on renewables, but it doesn't create the power it's consuming. Those solar panels, hydroplants, wind turbines etc would still be generating energy without it, and would be used for other things.
In fact it's a bone of contention in Iceland, because they have to build more energy generation to power an industry creating 0 jobs, 0 local wealth and creating 0 in taxable income. It's just a complete drain.

Whuts its range n how much is a new battery?
I always love the new battery questions considering real world data is showing better than expected degredation of the batteries, 15 years it's looking like to hit 60% capacity.. that's longer than the lifespan of an ICE car before it's becoming particularly difficult to live with (that's still a 200 mile range car going 120)
It's a really bizarre thing to keep trying to pick at.
