Q. How do you get permission to fly a private aeroplane at low height over a major city centre?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It'll be an advertising company with a licence I'd assume?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Probably Farage or some other Brexiter Gammon

Imagine having a licensed aeroplane how drunk you could get

I actually agree the Black Lives Matter movement wording isn’t best. I didn’t get it at first too. But I think the movement since George Floyd amongst so many other positive things, has helped provide clarity about what the principles of the movement are and why it came about.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not sure I agree with that. We don't even know why the cop killed him yet.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes we do.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We do? Why was that then?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
For being black.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
How do we know this?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Because it’s been happening ever day for 400 f*cking years.

So every black person killed in police custody were killed because they were black?

I’ve never had an issue with the black lives matter wording. I don’t think you can get much less incendiary than just asking for their lives to matter. There’s not many steps on the ladder lower than just...mattering.

The key is who they are directing that message to though. They aren’t making a comment on any one else’s lives, it’s how others perceive theirs. They don’t need to tell a white American that his life matters, he’ll already think it does anyway. They’re asking that he thinks theirs does too, that’s it.

That’s also why this all lives matters and denouncing all racism is simplistic rubbish as well. Of course all racism is bad, not all of it is from the same root cause though and so can need different steps to fix it. The first for any form has to be understanding, acknowledgement and education of those root causes though.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah but mate you’re assuming that the average person thinks of things in this similar reasoned manner; they don’t. A lot of people will take it completely the wrong way and I genuinely think that the wording should have catered for that reality.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I take the point but bear in mind black lives matter won’t fix this. Anything they say will not change the minds of the people you’re talking about, I’m not sure how they could have worded it in any way that would have made much of a difference to those stupid enough to be offended by this anyway.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think there’s a lot of people in the middle who will take the name wrongly and therefore right it off. They’re not staggeringly stupid people but just took the naming alone and would be pushed more towards the other side.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

If they do that, they are staggeringly stupid on this topic, which is why it goes back to education (again).

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I’m not so sure mate, even people in this thread who fully support the movement admit that the naming put them off at first so I think it’s fair to acknowledge that some other people might also be without being staggeringly stupid.
The same applies to BLM also whereby they have not always fully reported incidents with accuracy because they haven’t looked into certain things with enough detail or research.
Information is key and I just don’t think their naming will encourage as many people to look into their cause further than it could have done with a different name.
Perhaps it was deliberate to cause controversy to lead to debate but I think it can also cause further division which is really not what most reasonably people want.

For me, everybody is the same regardless of colour or wherever they come from, I don`t distinguish between colour or race in any bad way, so BLM is singling out one particular race and promoting racism in my opinion. I can understand why some people may be fed up with it.

BLM is promoting racism?

Really?

Man that’s about the most ignorant thing I’ve ever read.

We had NHS happy clapping for a bit which was conveniently followed immediately by BLM. What will it be by the end of July?

Ahh it is tiring explaining against this rhetoric. This may come across lazy, maybe it is, but please read up on the subject. And as for your previous whataboutery comments that ‘but..but..racism exists everywhere’ see literally all the replies to Colemanballs.

Why do people take offence from the name of the movement? It really isn’t personal, only if you make it so.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Because some people can’t take a step outside themselves and try to walk in someone else’s shoes.

They think anything that makes them feel ever so slightly uncomfortable must inherently be a bad thing so they try to rationalise their feelings with false equivalences to try to feel better.

The very fact that someone rented this plane, bought the banner and flew over a live televised event shows exactly why we should be supporting the BLM in their quest for equality.

Antagonistic, hateful actions.

It’s pretty clear what’s happening here. Black people (and their allies) take to the streets and demand a bit of f*cking justice and an end to police brutality and white people are losing their goddam minds over it.

But you know that isn't true, for example in America, especially.

Because I think there are some people who will look at it too simplistically and make assumptions. Are they right to make assumptions? Of course not but I doubt that there would be the same reaction if it were named, I don’t know, Black Equality Movement (I’m clearly not a good slogan writer but I’m sure you get my point).
If I were making a movement about something, I wouldn’t name it something that gave people any excuse for dismissing my movement.
I think they chose that for the exact reason of controversy to create a snowball of conversation, which I get completely but with that also comes division. Presumably they were aware of that and decided that it was a price worth paying. Maybe I’m giving them too much credit and they simply wanted to name it BLM because they really think that people don’t think that BLM.

Sat nav,

Replying like this as that got quite a long chain!

Intelligence comes in different forms. We have to get to the point where everyone’s first thought process is not to focus on a name or a slogan but to question underlying motives and why. That is what education to me is fundamentally about. We all have to consider ourselves stupid to begin with on every topic and go through that period of understanding.

I agree, which is exactly why I personally would have chosen a different name as I want to try and convince those people because those people are the ones doing harm.

————————
This is something I’ve truly realised and reflected on on ja606 recently. If you ever ever talk about anything anti-racist you will get a sizeable minority of posters deflecting from the issue. ‘But..what about this..what about that’.

If you ask everyone on this forum, or even anyone in Britain ‘do you think racism is bad’. Obviously everyone says yes. But even simple, benign discussions about antiracism soon get shot down by the same suspects on this forum.

It’s not BLM’s fault if some dumb cuuunts misinterpret the message and the name.

I’d say the vast majority of people get what it’s about. The rest are a bunch of Karen’s who would be off missing the point somewhere else anyway.
