They think anything that makes them feel ever so slightly uncomfortable must inherently be a bad thing so they try to rationalise their feelings with false equivalences to try to feel better.
————————
This is something I’ve truly realised and reflected on on ja606 recently. If you ever ever talk about anything anti-racist you will get a sizeable minority of posters deflecting from the issue. ‘But..what about this..what about that’.
If you ask everyone on this forum, or even anyone in Britain ‘do you think racism is bad’. Obviously everyone says yes. But even simple, benign discussions about antiracism soon get shot down by the same suspects on this forum.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yep, always plenty of whataboutery.
The only thing that bothers me with campaigns of any kind is when the paying of respect becomes so contrived that if anybody doesn’t follow the media led pattern of behaviour it gets picked up on and they get branded racist/terrorist/anti royal/ anti establishment or whatever name relating to said cause
I know this is totally different to the plane thing tonight but it happens

Why do people take offence from the name of the movement? It really isn’t personal, only if you make it so.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Because some people can’t take a step outside themselves and try to walk in someone else’s shoes.
They think anything that makes them feel ever so slightly uncomfortable must inherently be a bad thing so they try to rationalise their feelings with false equivalences to try to feel better.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I agree, which is exactly why I personally would have chosen a different name as I want to try and convince those people because those people are the ones doing harm.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s really not the name. Whatever you call it there will be some people who will deliberately miss the point
Where is there an excuse to dismiss it unless you’re either taking the stance that black lives don’t matter.
Other use of matter is simply matters to do with black lives.
I literally don’t understand how you could think either is controversial in any way.
That legal firm black lawyers or whatever it was that refused to hire white people...yeah that’s a different story. But BLM...come on now.

I blame Moyes for inspiring these events.
It was actually on this site of all places I saw an alternative to Black Lives Matter that works better and retains the simplicity, power and point behind the statement - just Black Lives Matter Too.

Sat nav,
Replying like this as that got quite a long chain!
Intelligence comes in different forms. We have to get to the point where everyone’s first thought process is not to focus on a name or a slogan but to question underlying motives and why. That is what education to me is fundamentally about. We all have to consider ourselves stupid to begin with on every topic and go through that period of understanding.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Wise to reply this way mate.
I agree that education is fundamental but a slogan has a purpose: to grab attention & to encapsulate the main feeling of what it is you’re fighting for or promoting. It’s a reality that people will make assumptions based on initial information (ie slogans), which for me is why they’re so important to get bang on.
I also think that whilst BLM is campaigning against racism, let’s not forget that it is born out of campaigning against police brutality of black people in America and a lot of that is a very complicated situation, certainly not cut & dry (avoided black & white 😂😂😂).
Like I said, they might have considered everything you’re saying and everything I’m saying but felt that it was still the right thing to do; their choice it’s their movement.
