Gazza could have been a great. Most on this list have had better careers, I suppose.
You do wonder what would have happened if he had gone to Utd
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeh, I watched a documentary about recently and hadn't realised how close that had come to happening.

I asked the question because I think there's an argument to say that he's the most talented midfielder England have ever had and I'd be tempted to rank him right at the top.

But then again, with injuries and other factors, his career perhaps didn't reach the heights it could have, so maybe you can't rank him above those on the list who have won trophy after trophy.

Out of interest, where are people putting Gazza on this list?

Some fantastic talents on the list, whatever way you slice it.

When you look at the list, it feels like we're in a bit of a lull for central midfielders currently. Maybe it's the way teams play.

You can never say who's the best, so it comes down to what type of player you like and probably who you support.

Only thing I'd say is that Pogba has no place being compared to this lot

Paul Scholes
Steven Gerrard
Roy Keane
David Silva
Patrick Viera
Yaya Toure
Frank Lampard
Kevin De Bruyne
Michael Essien
Claude Makelele
Ngolo Kante
Cesc Fabregas
Juan Mata

<insert a lot of spaces here>

Paul Pogba

Yes Keane was immense for a number of years. A top five IMO but like others have said, there are different types of player in the same position.

Lampard 2nd
----------------------------------------------------------------------
arguably the most big game player in the list. Scored in important games all the time, finals, semi finals, the article also says at their best.
Lampard followed by toure have the two best seasons out of all them players.
Lampard also 2nd in ballon dor.

So at his best it has to be lampard. If we are talking aoverall, thats a different conversation

Don't take this as a dig, but I love it when people invent their own criteria, apply it and then hey presto, it spits out the answer they want.

You have every right to your opinion but let's not pretend that is the only way for us to arrive at our answer

A good conversation to be had over a 5 year stretch.
In terms of at their best which i guess can mean their best season.

I'd have lampard. 2nd in ballon d'or behind ronaldinho.

yaya toure - unreal numbers in one of his seasons.

KDB - current poty, was unreal last season.

If we are talking 5 year stretch or so im not sure who would be top, maybe keane, vieira etc stand a chance

More than willing to accept any other criteria, hence my second comment. If only you'd have waited ay .

What is considered as at their best? Their prime? their best seasons?who won most.

For example drogba at his best was the best striker in the league (finals etc) but if we are talking at their best over a season, then henry has it hands down (20 goals and assists)

But it's all opinion, there's no right and wrong. I'd take Cantona over both of them, but that's me.

No right or wrong is there mate, and we'll all be biased to our own players - particularly if you go to games.

I have sat there and watched Keane & Scholes absolutely dominate the league in a two man central midfield, laying the platform for Beckham, Giggs and whichever striking combination to deliver the goods.

Hard for me to see past those players.

Surely coming second in ballon d'or is up there.
Are we talking seasons, games, period of seasons?

I'm not applying a criteria, I'm just using my eyes.

It's subjective and not suitable for ranking but I don't like using criteria to do things like this... I like watching football drawing an opinion on it.

As United and Liverpool fans have told us over the years the best criteria for judging a player is how many quotes they can find of other players praising them

....

I would never rank them against each other really. Two different types of player.

Keane for me over scholes every day of the week.

scholes was a more gifted player, but Keane brought far more to the team.... says a lot when you can say the guy left the club 15 years ago and has never really been replaced
