What T said. Tesco's definitely still cheaper but Sainsbury's not so much. But it's drastically offset by anything involving a service. You can definitely survive on less in England but the price of having a good time seems out of control.

the other thing UK doesnt have is tipflation
posted 1 day, 16 hours ago
the fact that Canada has tipping at the same expected level as America - where they can legally pay servers basically nothing unlike in Canada - is the biggest con
posted 1 day, 16 hours ago
Yeah but i honestly didn't even notice the benefit of it when I was going out this time. In terms of price anyway, but on the flipside the sheer laziness of anyone willing to facilitate splitting a bill was very annoying.

Eh UK has gotten worse but i think you guys are just shocked at how much worse it is vs when you last visited rather than it actually being comparable to how pricey BC is for everything
posted 1 day, 16 hours ago
The standard tip has gone from 15 to 18% and there's nothing stopping you putting 15 or lower. Even then, me and Mrs B went for a couple of drinks each last night - including tip was $30 or £16. You can't do that in England

Yeah that's true, my brother has just moved over and he's taken some bar work at a brewery on Granville Island while he looks for work in his desired field and the money he can make just doing the bar (no real service) is pretty nuts

That's valid though. And the difference has narrowed in that time. When I moved rents were about the same, still are, but groceries around 40% more. According to the Google it's now more like 20%. When the population is worse off like Mandy points out, that's a chit situation

For me i felt like the day to day stuff was closer than it ever had been, but the UK came out way cheaper. But when you take into consideration housing costs, transport costs and energy costs, BC was a clear winner for me. My trip made me so much more grateful for what i get in BC.

4 drinks for $30 with tip? Nah cause you would be looking at $9 for most places if its a pint

Metropol is like $5 pints in the middle of gastown. Its why we went there so much

Outside of Victoria city centre pints aren't $9. Tbf I'm comparing from Colchester and the surrounding area

Honestly if you know where the happy hours are there's a lot of places you can do that. My local i can get a beer and burger for $9

Im generally talking Downtown, Fairview, Kits, East Van for where id hang out

Anyway, the point stands IMO. Just because Canada is more expensive for some things doesn't mean England hasn't got way too expensive for regular stuff. Like I say, an hour or more from London and you're paying Rome/Paris tourist prices.
