In the picture that he tweeted post his injury he looked in good shape. Even at the start of the season he was in good shape. He has always had a fewmore pounds in his body but never seemed to affect his game. All I am saying is that there isn't a significant difference from seasons gone by.

Yea for God's sake guys, Rooney is one of our most hard working players on the team. He busts himself out there, the last few years he has even been taking on two roles for the sake of the team. His effort or workrate has never been in question for United.
That's why I don't give a toss if he puts on a few bloody pounds over the summer. Drinking, eating chippies, lazing around etc is his way of blowing off steam. This needs to be done so he can clear his head and come back ready for the new season.
It's a few bloody pounds, not like his weight is ballooning up and down excessively. Give the guy a break.

Agreed, did we forget the "performance" against Everton? Maybe not a great example since he always seems terrified to play there, but he was just rambling around the pitch, he added nothing. I think we're doing fine without him at the moment.
Well said Patriarch. Some fans have no sense of loyalty towards our own players. As soon as you sign a RVP, every other player suddenly seems less important.

And who did anything of substance against Everton bar may be Kagawa and De Gea? So may be bench everyone else as well. Everton away is a tough game, there was no space to play into. I am not undermining anyone's performance in the last 3 games but the level of opposition should be kept in perspective.
Listen, i have 'some' loyalty to Rooney but i am also not a devout worshipper like many here.
Even before RVP was signed, i have been lamenting about Rooney's weight which is as a result of his destructive habits during his off-season (smoking, boozing, gorging) and touch for a few seasons.
Maybe some here celebrate mediocrity but i don't.
Rooney is a talent but if you refuse to open your eyes and see that the lad has regressed as a footballer for a few seasons now because he bangs in the goals then more fool you.
I carp about Rooney because i believe he is not living up to his potential and for a player of his ilk, that is unacceptable.
Ronaldo
Rooney did play badly against Everton but Kagawa played just as bad against Saints. Should we dump him too?
You should never judge a player on their first or second game of the season, especially after a summer tournament.
By December i'm sure Rooney will have scored 10-15 goals and people will find someone else to moan about.
To be fair Red Con, banging in the goals is pretty important and he fired us to the top of the table last season.
Sadly our porous defence and shaky midfield allowed City to join us there.
He has been turned into a number 9 by Sir Alex in the same way Carrick has been asked to be a simple DM for the good of the team.
If everyone else was as consistent as Rooney last season we would have won the league.

Hardly any celebrity writes their own autobiography. They all employ writers. Still Rooney is going to try to sell his ordinary daily routine as if it is something special. As I said if you want to believe every word then its up to you. If you are highlighting that he himself admitted he gains a few pounds during holidays then you should also mention that he said he loses those pounds quickly by working extra hard in training. You are trying to project him as some sort of irresponsible player who is not aware of what is needed of him, thats all I am refuting.
I never said he didn't I said I just think he should be keeping himself in shape whilst he's not playing as well.
Ronaldo trains all year round and that's why he's where he is. I don't think Rooney should of gone to Vegas just before the Euro's either. He's still one of my favourite players which is why I'd like to see him being as good as he can be.
err, I wont be reading 'his' book.
I am not trying to project Rooney in any way. Im saying that at the start of this season his physique isnt "as good as it has ever been"... like you have claimed.
Its quite obvious for all to see. Why did you say that?

Same old argument about 'not reaching potential'. Well people use it against Nani too. I think if you accept someone as a good player when they reach their potential (however lower their potential may be) then you are worshipping mediocrity. I judge players by their contribution and what they produce not by whether they have reached their potential or not. He is a striker and scored 35 goals last season and was the main reason we put up a stiff challenge for the title.
He scored goals? So? Isn't that his job?
In a team like ours, inferior players to Rooney will score goals.
FFS, Hernandez scored 31 goals in over two seasons - WHILST PLAYING A MARGINAL ROLE.
A breakdown of Rooney's goals (as have been done here several times) shows it is not that impressive. Rooney, leading the line for us, considering the chances we create should be scoring 50 goals a season.
Great if true, but Rooney shouldn't be rushed back just yet, maybe he could be on the bench against Liverpool, but for now Kagawa and RVP to start the next two games.
The signings of Kags and RVP should prove as a motivation for Rooney to get back to full fitness and get back to a high playing level, im hoping it does.

no one is going to score 50+ goals in the EPL. It just isnt going to happen. Even Messi couldnt do that. Fergie mentioned this in his RVP press conference. Thats why the EPL is tougher than LL.
Red Con
We've had much more creativity in our teams over the years and no striker has ever scored 50 a season for us so it shows just how difficult it is to reach such a high figure like that.
35 in 44 games (with many of those in big matches) is a very good stat.
33 goals conceded is the more concerning stat.
In 2002/2003 when we had Giggs, Beckham and Scholes at their creative best Ruud scored 44 goals in 52 games.
A goal every 1.18 games.
Rooney last season (with 35 in 44) scored in every 1.26 games.
Not that far off.

Now I understand how you 'calculate' potential. Basically pluck a number out of thin air, which is more than the number of goals a striker scored and then say he is not reaching his potential. Every striker will miss chances and you can also argue that a good striker has already done a lot of hard work to be in a situation where he got a chance so you have to give some credit for that.
But again your bar is too high. If you think he should be scoring 50, which none in the PL has ever done, then basically you are paying him a big compliment by admitting that at least he has the highest potential of all players who played in the PL. Or you are saying that many players also had the same potential but did not reach it, which basically says that your 'potential' theory is BS.
I can understand someone talking about 'potential' when you are talking about a very young player but if you have already been a regular player for a couple of seasons or more then what counts in my book is the performance not the potential.
SAF also said 'never in my lifetime will City win the league'
What happened again?
There is no doubt that the Premier League is stronger than La Liga but i believe Messi and Ronaldo would be equally as effective here. Especially if they have excellent supporting cast.
Red con is on the wum or woke up on the wrong side of bed!
We created probably 500 chances last season.. surely Rooney could have scored at least 400 of them??
He's facking rabbish!!!
Red con, how many goals do you think RVP should be scoring this season to qualify in your book as a player who has reached or surpassed his potential?
