Rooney scored 35goals for us last season. But breaking down goals actually gives more insight to Rooney's importance to the team
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9wRM-WVapI
semi Solo/shots in the box - 4
Crosses - 17
Free kicks - 2
Penalties - 10
Screamers - 2
As you can see half of his goals come from crosses on the wings. Another 10 come from penalties!! SO without quality crosses or penalties, Rooney is unable to score a staggering 77% of his goals.
For 2009/2010 season:
Funny enough those above stats are not an anomaly. Lets look at the 09/10 season when he score 34goals
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xdecgd_wayne-rooney-all-34-goals-season-20_sport
Once again a breakdown of the goals shows the following!!
2 counter attacks goals
20 crosses goals
3 semi solo/shots in the box
1 super goal vs spurs (reminiscent of the Rooney of old)
5 penalteis
3 scramble in the box goals
Notice that 20 of his 34 goals came from crosses. 20!17 in the previous breakdown!!I think more credit should go to the wingers placing the ball in the perfect position than Rooney. Then you have 5 penalties. So thats 73 % of his goals where he has not needed his all round footballing ability to score. Just his finishing ability. 77% in the previous breakdown
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Look at the evidence above lads. I am not saying Rooney is not important to the team but this 'myth' that he carries the team is fallacy.
Thanks to Ole for the stats btw!
No one has said that he carries the team, all I am arguing is that he was an important player last season and in my book did very well as a striker.
SO without quality crosses or penalties, Rooney is unable to score a staggering 77% of his goals.
--------------------
No striker is going to score goals without assists. A striker also has to be in a position which makes it easier for the winger to cross the ball to him. We play more through the wise players rather than from the centre so its obvious more of the goals are going to come from crosses.
While on penalties, some of those penalties were actually won by Rooney himself, Also it is not easy scoring penalties, which you can see yourself with RVP and Chico missing theirs recently. RVP used to take Arsenal's penalties as well, no one tries to subtract those goals for him.
Red
You're missing a very important point and that is you still have to take these chances.
Why do players like Darren Bent, Kevin Phillips or Andy Johnson never get signed by big clubs? Because they haven't got that big game temperament.
Remember Bent at Spurs? Missed plenty of chances and blew his chance at the big time.
Rooney may get a lot of his goals from crosses but it takes a special player to convert a high percentage of them and in the very biggest matches.
Don't you think if anyone could score those goals we'd sell Rooney and save a bunch of money off our wage bill and just bring in Jordan Rhodes for like £20K a week?
Imagine how many more goals we would have scored had Rooney not had to come into midfield to make up the numbers when Scholes was knackered or Sir Alex oddly played 2 in the centre when up against a 3 man midfield!
Can we please take off those Rooney tinted glasses off?
If he ain't fit enough he shouldn't even be on the bench. The boss himself mentioned that Wazza had gained weight over the summer break and he needs to lose it. Now I'd rather believe him than some Rooney fan boys on internet forum.
'Rooney fan boys'? He is a United player so we're all Rooney fan boys.
As for the weight it's probably gone. He's been in full training for days now.
If he plays tonight it will be down to Sir Alex, not us 'fan boys'.
The boss himself mentioned that Wazza had gained weight over the summer break and he needs to lose it.
----------
This is what Sir Alex said - " Wayne is no Ryan Giggs. Ryan has never put a pound on in his whole life. Wayne is a boy that needs games, you can see that from the frame he's got. He is stocky, strong and really needs games, simple as that.". Don't see him saying he needs to be benched. If you are believing the boss then believe the whole thing.
To get the best of Rooney he needs to be playing a lot of games and as soon as possible.
A spell on the sidelines is the worst thing for him because there's no way he'll get match fit.
RVP was bought to play alongside Rooney and to suggest otherwise is foolish. I'm sure the second Rooney has a modicum of a chance of playing he'll be straight in the team and we'll be better for it.
Never thought I will hear this but defending a striker who plays for my club, scored 35 goals last season as a key player, being out of form in the first 2 games he started in the new season (where many other players were equally bad) and suddenly I get labelled as a 'fanboy' by other fans supporting the same club.
So if RVP goes through a lean patch in next 2 games should we be benching him too? Great logic which means we would be constantly changing the team all through the season.
I know some people are going to say that Rooney's case is not form but fitness,. In that case I would believe in SAF and our training staff to know exactly whether a player is fit enough to play or not.
wicked
I am countering your claim that he is in the best shape of his life. That's all.
RVP was bought to play alongside Rooney.
--------------------------
Wrong. RVP was bought because a world class striker that is proven in the PL was readily available.
I am guessing we will see someone with the following name on here before long:
Rooney van Persie

Agreed Wicked.
Rooney gets so much criticism on here. You never see De Gea getting slated for his flaps, Rafael for his mistakes, Evra having article after article slating him, Nani for his awful games or Chicharito for not knowing the offside rule.
And nor should we because they're United players.
But ever since Rooney questioned the clubs direction he's suddenly become the lazy, fat, 'glorified Paul Dickov' of the team.
He saw Ronaldo sold and Valencia (a good player but no Ronaldo) brought in so was quite right to question just what the club was doing. It was sorted out quite quickly and Rooney has scored a ton of goals since then and we're made some very big signings.
I'd say that the whole sage had the desired effect so I hope people can stop slating Rooney for something that happened ages ago.
Hell, Nani hasn't even signed a new contract so where's his commitment to the club or people slating him?
(Just to be clear, I don't want any player to be slated, just consistency)

He was bought to play alongside Rooney. Sir Alex said at the time of signing that it would be mouth watering to see them playing together and I'm in agreement.
You never see De Gea getting slated for his flaps, Rafael for his mistakes, Evra having article after article slating him

Well, whenever that happens people line up to defend those players. Very few people defend Rooney.
Some of our fans don't like the fact that others fans cannot warm to Rooney in the same way they do. Rooney can be a fantastic player. However, minus his goalscoring which again, has been fantastic, the overall quality of his play, passing and first touch has been below par for some time now. Against Everton he looked criminally out of shape. Anyone who has working eyes can see this.

I think this guy comes on this site drunk half of the time.
I don't think many people are questioning what he's done, my point of view is in the off season he should be taking better care of himself. You can see his class when you go to games at OT, he stands out like Scholes etc.. I just think he could be better prepared before a balls been kicked.
Red Indian
I come on drunk? You're the one who yesterday said we 'easily have a better team than Real Madrid'.

I am countering your claim that he is in the best shape of his life. That's all.
-----------------
I never said that he is in the best shape of his life. He has evolved as a striker over the years and his body shape has changed accordingly and he has gained bit more weight. All I am saying is that he didn't look to me like he was unfit enough not to start. I would trust SAF and our staff to not play a player who is unfit specially when it is the first game of the season and not a major title decider or something. To be honest I was more concerned about his form than fitness. But he has only started 1 game and was a sub in the other one where he hardly played for 10-15 minutes before he was injured. Being out of form in one game is not really something I would use to judge a player who more than played his part last season.
