if I remember correctly it was, mmm.
no dave, and rbw, i remember some of our fans were like you, they were shocked that we were signing him but at the time we needed a defender due to the injuries we had.
must be a quick typer then and on topic Im also glad we signed him and if Arsenal did he would be called "world class" but they call him Average because we have him
exactly, i remember at the time they were calling Vermaelen ' world class' but he seems to be injury prone.
why would any United fan be shocked that we buy good young players?
like it came out of nowhere like when we signed Chicharito.
I'm pleased to have him and for £7m I think it was, absolute bargain! At the moment for me he's being Rio, Vidic and Evans but it won't be long until he begins leap frogging them all just the same way Evans did when people were calling him our 5th choice defender.
agreed darkphoenix, other papers i.e. the guardian and telegraph said thee's 12 million, on Smalling, he's come on leaps and bounds and i'm glad we've got him.
I remember after we signed him his form suffered quite badly. He made quite a few mistakes and also bagged himself an OG or two. However, I have to say that I have been mighty impressed with him since he joined. The lad really has got everything that you want a CB to have. I see many similarities between him and Rio and I think that he will turn out to be one of the very best CBs we have ever had at United. Whether or not he reaches the levels that Rio did for 2-3 years and is the best in the world remains too be seen. However, he has all the attributes and I believe attitude to do so. The lad seems to learn from his mistakes and just keeps in improving.
statman john, i remember when he scored an own goal on my birthday against Chelsea 3 years ago, i was gutted but i've moved on from that, i can see him staying with us for the rest of his career.
OP
I agree that he will become one of England's best ever CBs
Oh thanks green_day, I don't know why I thought he was £7m. Even £12m is a bargain for an English centre-back.
darkphoenix, it does sound a lot of money a bit like when Ronaldo first joined us.
the fee was 10mill wasnt it
I had never seen him play.
I remember the Telegraph saying
------
Manchester United made Cristiano Ronaldo the most expensive teenager in British football history yesterday when they confirmed that the fee for the Sporting Lisbon winger was £12.24 million.
-----
I still remember his debut. You just knew you had something special!
12m did seem like a lot then, but I honestly wouldn't sell him for 30m now. He has barely put a foot wrong since he joined United and he appears to have a great attitude. To come back from the poor form he was showing whilst on loan after we signed him and hit the ground running at United took some character.

against bolton in the 03/04 season, it was only a couple of months since beckham joined Real Madrid
yes ruiney.

Seriously?!!
not sure about Jones... yet,
but he is young. Fergie shifts him about too much imo. He needs a run of games at CB really regardless of who is or isn't available
dont know if you can remember a player we had in the 90s called Ronny Johnson. Jones is like him.Good in Midfield or CB but not a world beater in either position.
