Farcical series and one I took little enjoyment from!

posted on 26/8/13

Not sure what the umpires did wrong yesterday? They played by the rules and regulations set out by the ICC. If England had been fielding and Aussies batting in that situation, I'm sure not many people in here would have complained?

Umpires have to be fair to both sides and they made the right call. Had the Aussies bought on the spinners then the game might have continued but they new they were going to lose.

Cant remember a more boring, unmonumental Ashes series.
Dont know whats the reason, may be poor contest, bad umpiring or simply over expectation?
But if the Premier contest in Test which is Ashes does so bad advert of the game, then there may be some truth in death of test cricket prediction.

Agree. Personally I couldn't get excited by this series either. Very one sided and a gap between both sides. Clarke aside the Aussies aren't any better than medicore test teams like Pakistan and Lanka.

I wouldn't call this a one sided affair. All the test where very close bar lords and with abit more luck the Aussie may have won a few tests.

What was farcical was that the umpires took so long to do a light check as they went off before on a 8 reading and yesterday when they went off it was around 5.8

Some people just do not understand test cricket and the ashes. They are too stupid to appreciate it for what it is and what it means. This ashes series was fantastic attritional cricket between the two greatest and proudest cricketing nations on earth

They also think that 50 and 20 over cricket is all that matters, well you can stick that shizzle up your silly uneducated backsides

....Bloody peasants

Agreed Sprinkler - i enjoyed it, thought it was great. Problem is people have been spoiled by the Ashes in 2005 and expect 'em all to be like that! They should wait and watch test cricket for around 40 years which is what i have done and then they would appreciate the really great times and series' all the more!
Like you say, Sprinkler, peasants!! don't like it go watch a T20 which is like having a burger instead of a steak to me!

By the way on the light issue - i agree with Geoffrey this is something that should be left to the BATSMEN to decide. It was like that in the past but because of this STUPID change to the rules people are left feeling cheated at a game. Time once again for the ICC and the like to get their house in order and just do a bit of thinking

Boycott is spot on. England would never had won in khirachi under current ICC rules. poor ending advert for test cricket yesterday.

Sprinkler,

Many people may have found the series that way. How does that make them uneducated? Also, what part of your "education" tells you with certainty and gurantees 100% beyond all reasonable doubt that England and Aussies are indeed the "greatest" and "proudest" cricketing nations more than the other 8 or 9 nations??

.... All about respecting others opinions without (sometimes) agreeing with them buddy

posted on 26/8/13

Name me two greater and prouder cricketing nations other than England and Australia, Afridi14........ I cant wait for your educated reply

West Indies are at number 3 btw

The rest are not great nor proud, but thats my opinion judged on their lack of class and match fixing culture

You can rant and rave all you like but I just "ooze" facts and common sense with an added dash of karma

You need to waste 40 years of your life inorder to understand a sport by the name that the majority of the world mistakens as an insect, some as term exam and only few(test nation) as sport?
Then son, let me tell you you've wasted your life along with all those who've wasted that many years trying to understand a game.

what are you on about Kharse? I was pointing out that I've probably spent more years watching cricket than most have on these boards. I love cricket but its not the only one for me (I didn't SAY that did I?) i'm a keen Bantams (Bradford City fan) and love my football. I also have a bit of time for rugby and golf. I EVEN love American football!!
I WAS pointing out that crickets a bit different - particularly test cricket. Americans point to the fact that over 5 days you may not see a result, which they find incredible. I think we all as lovers of cricket need to appreciate how difficult that is to perceive for some. But to be honest in test cricket as i say the really exciting series just don't come around that often. Doesn't put me OFF cricket.
There. Explained that enough?

Ohh dear, looks like you’ve shot yourself in the foot there mate – its YOUR opinion, which was my exact point mate

As for me giving an answer as to who is the “Greatest and proudest” – you tell me what criteria you are using for that. How are you measuring it. Different people will have different boundaries on that particular measurement and as there is nothing concrete (from my limited education ) its virtually impossible to define. Ps – I might need access to peoples hearts to measure just how “proud” they actually are <wink>.

Just a final point, I can kinda understand the west indies and aussies being termed “great” once upon a time after dominating test and odi cricket between 80- to early 00’s – but can you pinpoint exactly what England are doing in your top three? And exactly where does the proudness fall?

As for your boring and over-used matching fixing comment – the aussies, saffers, pak, india lanka have all been found to be match fixing at some point or another. England have had many accusations with athers a proven one and now whispers of ball tampering, but off course when any other country reverse swings the ball they are cheating/tampering, but when a white English boy does it then it’s the “art of bowling” according to the non-biased media led by the greatest and proudest of them all – the daily mail, daily star and the sun.

If we take out tests and world cups then I agree with you. England despite not achiving a great deal in both (overall history) are indeed the greatest and proudest because they are the only ones not to have match fixed and have instead stuck to the class and urinated on the pitch instead … seriously, that’s probably the least “educated” criteria ive ever come across for greatest and proudest…. Deary me!!!

Greatest = windies and aussies at a point in time having dominated teams for decades
Proudest = non measurable no matter what criteria you use

Purely by achievement, there's ONLY one King of cricket that sends shiver down the spine of all other nation.
A U S T R A L I A.
Which I'm not even fan of but most of the history they have been the team to beat.
As Brazil is to international Football, Australia is to Cricket.Period.
All other teams have had their moment in patches.
But thats different point to this article.

My favourite team growing up used to be (any team) vs Australia.
Only to watch australia beaten, which rarely happened.
Those time I used to wonder, how boring Australian fans must be to always watch their side smashing other and getting no tough competition.
It was like Australia were the big boys and other team kids, and naturally I used to support underdogs including England.
But how time changes.
Australia getting beaten nowadays seem no great deal.
But looking at their past record, I fear another world dominating Australian team is just round the corner.

I see that Pakistan are under investigation by the ICC again for irregular betting patterns in one of the odi`s played against the West Indies a few weeks back.
