Should play Chelsea at their own game and pay the release clause for Tyler Adams…

posted on 11/8/23

The club rolled the dice and struck the deal. LFC couldn't really have done anymore. Chelsea have spent months on this and the player is doing the deal he expected was prepared to sign.

Even the FSG staunchest critics have to acknowledge that mind control is a step too far, from what we could reasonably expect from owners.

I'm happy the club tried to do something. We had the deal but Caceido says no. I'm somewhat more optimistic as the club is willing to try get sh*t done, I find it reassuring that the ambition is there.

The club will have more cards to play. Hopefully there is still a few irons in the fire for this transfer window.

Everyone knew about Moisés Caicedo in 2021. The reason Brighton got him was because only they could figure out exactly who his agent was.

Moisés Caicedo and the Perils of Too Much Interest (Published 2021)
It did not take long for the performances of a 19-year-old in Ecuador to catch the eyes of Europe’s biggest clubs. In soccer’s cutthroat transfer market, they were not the only ones watching.

Just to expand on this a little, because who has the time to read stuff these days: when Caicedo was at his first club, Independiente, he was swamped with offers from agents. There were at least half a dozen who claimed to represent him, or to be due a cut of whatever deal.

Independiente are a really well-run club, possibly the best-run in South America, but it made it almost impossible for European teams to work out who they had to agree terms with. Every time they thought they had, someone else would appear.

Caicedo left Kancha in January, around the time he was trying to move to Arsenal. And then Chelsea. He's now with some people called Fútbol Division. But, interestingly, Kancha launched a legal case* against Caicedo for breach of contract.

*It's not entirely clear whether they did this when he left them for his new agency, or previously. Manuel Sierra, Fútbol Division's CEO, has said the case dated back to when he left Independiente. Sierra's said more than once he has "good relations" with Kancha.

All of which is to say: Caicedo's representation situation has always been insanely messy and it would be a good working assumption for journalists not to presume they are being briefed in good faith; and what the player himself wants may not be the only consideration.

Sounds messy.

Well we've made Chelsea pay a good chunk more at least. Hopefully we move quickly for another. I kind of want a £110m player now I know we can though or two players.

Hats off to Brighton for pulling off a blinder.

They've played this perfectly.

I expect us to pull out of the deal tonight, surprised we haven't already.

The fact that we haven't (assuming that it's not just a case of it hasn't been reported yet) suggests it's not over.

Basically Caicedo has refuses to report for training, he's gone on strike effectively.

I don't think Brighton (or Bloom) have done anything wrong, they gave a deadline to force the issue and it absolutely worked. But they're always going to sell to the highest bidder because that's best for them.

Whether it's Caicedo's preference or his agents interference doesn't really matter. If Chelsea find the money, he's their player.

Good news is we have money to spend! Wonder where we go now? Lavia is obvious but we seem to have walked away (for now). Palhinha? Florentino Lius?

Just seen our 3rd kit again. That's twice now and I hope it's the last. It's awful.

I like the away kit but the 3rd is a step too far for me. Looks like a box of Fiorentina kits got water damaged.
