He generally does.... We just have a lot of idiot fans

He's been poor most of this calendar year although he has had some niggling injuries. Hasn't scored in consecutive games for United since last September, I was quite shocked at that.

I really thought when we bought Mata that Moyes was planning on selling Rooney, instead he gave him a ridiculous new contract shortly after and now somehow he's subsequently been made club and national team captain. Rooney was better when he was 18, now he's just a shadow of his former self.

Mistake making him captain. Now he's going to have to be shoehorned into the team to the detriment of our attacking play.

If I'm honest Rooney is lucky that he still plays for utd and earns so much. Being made captain for both teams made the situation better for him.

No he generally doesn't. You clearly don't watch united games that much do you? Checking the score line and seeing his name on the score sheet now and then doesn't count. He has been putting in terrible performances for some time now. He's been living of his name and he can't even grasp the basics of football. Slows down attacks, horrible first touch, doesn't know what to do with the ball. I can keep going...

I've no beef with Wayne but I'm baffled why he is paid the amount he is and held in such high esteem by the sponsors.............but not by the general footballing public?
Fairplay to the man, he's living the dream but UTD are paying for it. Why?

Performance wise, Rooney has been underwhelming for quite some time. But more often than not, he delivers goals and assists-wise. As has been mentioned he had niggling injuries last season but managed 17 goals and 10 assists in 29 games. Not to be sniffed at.

Don't think he's become the footballer we all thought he could become, just accept that while the performances are inconsistent, he does produce where it matters most.

RVP has no better than Rooney last season when he played. His all round performance was every bit as poor but not a word is said about him.

I don't know why I have to continue to defend him, but Wayne Rooney's record (both goals and assists) speaks for itself.

Just take a look at his contribution over a season. It's a lot more than you think.

No idea why our fans love to hate on him so much. Is he one of world's best players? No, I'd agree he isn't.

Has he been an absolutely amazing signing and player for United? Most definitely.

Lay the fooook off Rooney and get behind the player and club. He's given us so much over 10 years yet people will defend duffers like Ando on here before they will Rooney.

Disagree. Van gaal has dropped important players before. Being captain means little if he does little on the pitch. So does that mean vice captain Fletch is now a main stayer in the side?

I was talking about for England not United.

That's fine he has given a lot to the club, but that's all in the past now. We're not sentimental anymore. He his declining at an alarming rate, so why couldn't he have been part of the 17 players we've already shipped out. We don't need him. We have players who are better and can take his assists/goals with ease. Di Maria/RvP/Falcao for a start.

Seriously, do some people on here get paid to criticise Rooney?

It's a genuine question...

Watch his next 3 performances for United and you'll notice a few things for a player that's meant to play in a #9/10 role.

1. 1st touch which everyone already knows about
2. Slows down the attack
3. His Hollywood ball to the right wing, he tried that today. Was he looking for Valencia in Ecuador?
4. Won't even bother trying to take on his man

None of those could ever dream of hitting 30 goals + in the #10 role.

"But that was a whole 2 seasons ago" ....

You are just regurgitating a few semi-myths that you think will enders you to the other anti-rooney muppets .

Is there something wrong with criticising a player that hasn't played well?

You don't have to agree with people but it's fair for someone to voice their concerns on a player not performing isn't it?

I think he comes in for higher scrutiny because of the fact he is our captain and the highest player not only for United but in the entire PL. Some probably just want some sort of justification, that's all.

Some people may go over the top with their criticism of Rooney but there seems to be an equal amount of over support for him too, he definitely polarising opinion.
