FIFA officials arrested

Blatter was probably as guilty as any of them but struck a deal to stitch all the lower level ones up for impunity. Allegedly of course

They are based in plush Swiss offices with their rolex watches, large expense accounts, private banks...say no more !

Have you considered the benefits to the region as a whole? Football is for everyone, not a select few

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Which is why I said the region SHOUld have it. I just don't think the right country has got it.

Far too small to host a world cup. 8 stadiums all around one City (as rest of country is a desert) slap bang in middle of our football season.

Yeah it was a great decision

Jeffrey Webb, FIFA Vice President, is one of the six arrested. He is President of the Cayman Islands F.A. A quick tour round the internet shows that the Cayman Islands are about 181st in world rankings. Previous F.A. Presidents in the Caymans served an average of 2 years in post until Webb took over - in 1991.

Call me suspicious, BUT the Caymans seem to have less football history and experience than me. They do a bit in the "financial services" industry though.

Thing is.......I can understand why Russia got it. They are one of the biggest countries in the world, never to have hosted the World cup and despite their extremely questionable politcal views, I think with their football heritage they deserve to host the big tounrament on the planet.

My issue is with Qatar. The country has one football stadium at present, a smaller population than Greater Manchester and it's in one of the hottest climates known to man.

Some people got very rich off the back of that decision. And I think we know who did best of all.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm sorry but this is nonsense. Every country has a right to host the world cup if their bid has merit.

Qatar did and it won, tough. You assume Russia paid no one? Right? Even England had offered bribes for votes as did Australia. Somehow that does not get reported.

Who is benefiting from the stadia being built in Qatar, western contractors.

Qatar did submit themselves to a probe but Russia destroyed all evidence of their bid but Russia is okay, right?

It is amazing how people are so biased in their assessment
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I hear Antarctica is to bid for the next World Cup.....I for one am in total support, for too long Penguins have been excluded from watching the World Cup and hosting the 2022 WC in the hottest country in the world was a blatant ploy to ensure Penguins are excluded once again.

Vote Antarctica 2026

I don't take the arrests seriously. Issa Hayatou and Blatter are two of the most corrupt football bigwigs that ever walked on earth and they are not arrested. Looks like the whole thing is targetting small fish. I hope those arrested will squeal.

I have no problem hosting it somewhere relatively obscure from a footballing perspective as it would spread the benefits of the sport to a wider audience,

My problem is with Qatar, a country where you will be publicly flogged for drinking alcohol, put to death for adultery. Homosexuality and apostasy are punishable by public stoning, blasphemy will get you considerable prison time, women can't wear tight clothing or vest tops or shorts in public (in the 50+ degree heat), you can be arrested for talking bad about the government (including online).
Oh and also, if it stays at the current rate, more people will have died building the Qatari World Cup than in 9/11.

These aren't the sort of conditions that FIFA should be happy to endorse or even be happy to send players and fans to.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I heard a stat the other day which was something like 15 workers will have died for every match of the 2022 World Cup, and thats if there are no more fatalities in the next 6 years.

Both 2018 and 2022 awards are now being looked into as part of a criminal investigation by the Swiss Authorities, announced this morning Bring them all down.

Actually, it was the opposite. England admitted their (frankly paltry) gifts and so were included in the reports. Russia conveniently lost all of their data and Qatar, the alleged bribes took place outside of their core bidding team and FIFA again didn't seem to want to investigate it.

I find it staggering how many people haven't actually read the Sunday times expose into it and FIFAs subsequent actions and then suggest it was all the same.

Quatar was bizzare as fk
All sports host there biggest events at the same venues Golf Tennis Motor Racing use tried and tested top notch venues, not venues that turn the result into a lottery, although FIFA did hit the jackpot

What worries me about this story is its about the FBI investigating corruption. Not a problem with that but isn't it strange that a few weeks ago that the New York times does a story on Blatter not having been to the US because of this investigation and then they break the news as an exclusive. Ever since the Murdock and police in their pay tipping off the press you have to worry about collusion and dare I say it corruption in the FBI for this to break as it did.
Just saying.

Give it to Australia. Most deserving country on the planet. We have a thriving league, a population of people ready to get behind football/soccer as the national sport and it's in a part of the world where we haven't had a world cup yet unlike most of the world.

The Sydney Olympics was described as one of the best ever and people are free to wear what they like and bang who they want , whatever gender. Anyone who's been to Australia will know just what a deserving country it is. Most of the stadiums are already built too.
