Rooney is supposedly England's star player. I'm fairly sure England would do better without him.
Raul was Spain's star player but they finally started to win stuff when he was benched
Pogba is probably Frances star player but he's not exactly essential to them
This version of Ronaldo isn't the man he once was. Portugal might find they work better as a team if he's not playing.

Right and who replaces him? This should be interesting

Portugal dropping Ronaldo would be a ridiculous decision considering he is their primary source of goals and their options up front are pitiful. Eder, the guy who couldn't even get a game for Swansea is their backup striker.
William Carvalho is a pretty average player and would command a ridiculous fee. He's honestly no better than Wanyama who's on the last year of his contract and is apparently available for around £12m

Portugal have decent midfield options with Carvalho, Sanches, Gomes, Moutinho, Mario and Rafa Silva. Play 5 of those and have Nani as the attacker.
No, none of these are as good as Ronaldo but maybe with the team not set up to get the ball to Ronaldo every time and give him every free kick and penalty they might actually play as more of a team.
Last year Portugal were brilliant at under 21 level and put 5 past Germany. They must have some brilliant players in their squad and shouldn't have to always make it about Ronaldo.

That would result in something even worse than the dross Germany served up in their stalemate with Poland the other night when they played Gotze as a false 9. No incisiveness, no penetration, no creativity, no pace, no focal point and most importantly no clinical edge needed to score goals
But Ronaldo is hardly a clinical edge for Portugal. He has never really ever turned up for them in tournaments. The stat about him taking 36 free kicks for them and never scoring is pretty shocking. Maybe someone else taking them might help.
He's scored 5 goals in his last 5 tourneys for Portugal

I agree that they would be far better off delegating free kick responsibility to someone else but when the other forwards in your squad include the likes of Quaresma, Nani and Eder, dropping Ronaldo altogether seems pretty ridiculous.

Although Portugal's shape was much better last night and their midfield looked like a unit, Gomes was pretty average.
William and Moutinho is a strange midfield pairing, but kind of worked, without either player having a great game.
I was surprised that Danilo was dropped after his performance against Iceland, and even more surprised that Santos didn't bring Renato on with about twenty mins left: the game was crying out for him.
Portugal don't get the most out of Ronaldo as a static number nine IMO. He should be coming wide and deeper and getting the ball into his feet more. I suppose this would be a more likely option if Portugal actually had another half-decent target man.
Ronaldo is usually great for Portugal, he just not got his scoring boots on. He could literally have had 3-4 goals in 2 games with just a tiny bit of Bale luck lol.
So what if he doesn't score what are the other clowns doing? Hardly see any other player busting a gut to get into the box except Nani.
Portugal need to play with a proper CF not this rubbish of Nani/Ronaldo up front. Even at Madrid he finds it uncomfortable to play CF with the usual suspects are injured.
Apart from his finishing he's actually been pretty good company the likes of Lewandowski, Ibrahimovic, Kane ect. Even Bales been dog chit but got lucky with 2 FK which would have been saved with ease if the GK didn't fak up.

No, I don't think he should or will be dropped. But I think that if he suddenly got an injury that ruled him out of the tournament that they wouldn't be any worse.
As for him being the second best player of all time? Behave. He's not even in the top 5

It's not all about goals. Gerd Muller scored 655 goals in 709 games. And won a World Cup. Where would he be in your list?
In my top 5 I'd have (in no order) Maradona, Messi, Pele, original Ronaldo and Baresi
what has he 'never really done' in a tournament for you..
I presume you mean, singly handedly won it?
Portugal are like England... they are, what they are... and that is never been good enough to win the WC or Euros in tournament football, at the highest level...despite the individual talents they might have had from time to time. Without Ronaldo this poor portugal side, which is what we see at the moment, would be pretty terrible.
This is understanding football
A player doesn't need to single handedly win a tournament to 'do it' for a country. This is a guy who screams at his teammates when they don't pass to him. A guy who has taken 36 free kicks for Portugal in tournaments and not scored a single goal. A guy who has to have everything go through him but still has scored a rubbish 5 goals in his last 5 tournaments.
If this guy was the second best player of all time I think he'd have done better with Portugal. He could have dragged them further than they have been.
Greece didn't have a Ronaldo and they won the euros. Sometimes it's more about he team than the star players and I think that if Ronaldo suddenly got injured then the Portuguese team might actually work better as a dynamic. They're not exactly 10 hobos with a Ronaldo. There is plenty of talent there.
Before the tournament, there were quite a few people from Portugal on my facebook saying that wouldn't mind if ronaldo got injured. So if you are quick to laugh at robb, you are also quick to laugh at what is likely a fairly well established opinion within the Portuguese community.
It is far from the most outlandish suggestion i've ever heard.... The BBC crew yesterday said that Ronaldo had taken more shots than 9 entire teams at the Euros. Some might love that stat, others might see it as a "shoot on sight" mentality which can unbalance a team.
Personally, I would always try to accommodate one of the world's best players and I do think Ronaldo will get a few goals before the tournament ends (i'm worried about us finish 2nd and facing them). Also, there complete lack of striking options means a balanced team would be difficult, with or without Ronaldo.
