It depends how much you put in to it and how much you apply yourself

If you enter with the mindset that the goal is to pass and get a degree then there is a chance you will learn very little

If you have the mindset that you are doing it to learn, make you a better person and put you on a road to success then you will learn a lot

Its not about passing, its about learning

---

Most of my friends have degrees in fields that have nothing to do with their jobs, and actually got the jobs from being at the bottom (as they couldn't get the ones they wanted with their degrees) and working up.

I think I read somewhere (and this is a common theme in work too), that of those hired the uni ones tend to already think they know everything because of being taught certain things at uni, and as a result get a shock, whereas those that come in from working their way up ate far more useful and grounded.

I went to uni, so I'm not banging my own drum, just don't think uni is that relevant for the most part anymore (sure in some fields-ie medicine it's essential), but for the most common subjects...

I agree with this.

Uni is no substitute for experience however when it is relevant then the grades often tell you who are hard workers and who just went to uni to get drunk

BTG

I had worse results and managed ok.

The mistake I made was doing all the same highers again in 6th year.

I got exactly the same results in that year. Felt like a waste of a year.

When the dust settles - it may be worth considering what (if any) re-takes or new subjects to do.

I would advise serious consideration to doing the same/same amount of highers in sixth year.

That's only my take on it.

Having a parent like yourself who gives a sh1 t will help him more in life than being a couple of grades down from a very high standard.

All the best.

I am here in the library really struggling with my motivation to complete this assignment in time. The self destructive part of my brain is telling me to just leave it and drop out. But I am trying my best to soldier through.

I just want to say thanks to all you guys on here who one after another have said that Uni is worthless. Really destroying my motivation here guys.

I wonder if the Union is open yet?

Lads as ever I appreciate the messages

I messed up my 5th year, took it for granted having got good standard grades, good prelim results without studying and found the rave scene and alcohol more enjoyable. Knuckled down in 6th year and got the grades to go study law.

I think what I found hardest today is he worked really hard but never got the reward I thought he deserved.

If he turns out as balanced and well as the posters on this thread with their excellent contributions then I will be concerned.

My boy starts Primary 1 next week and they are talking about bringing in assessment at that stage

Education is much more flexible now than it was when i was going through school/college/uni. For me its still about the right opportunity at the right time. I'm sure your boy will be fine, sounds like he has the right guidance and support in his life, which is the main thing

BTG, what is it your lad intends to do?

I was a bit of an erse in school, I missed quite a chunk of it to go and train and after football ended for me I didn't really have a lot of options due to me just having 1 higher and a few intermediates.

Thankfully my dad's friend got me into the financial industry when I was 16 and have worked my way up to a decent level for my age. I have a big year coming up with exams and projects for the company and I can only see a bright future ahead.

Assure your boy that not getting the grades he desired is not the end of the world, it's not about what you do in School that matters, it's about how you use the experience of it to forge a career for yourself after it.

All the best to him mate

Definitely Curly, its getting ridiculous. I still think 5 is too young to even be starting school. The scandinavian countries have got it right starting them a few years later.
