My boy starts Primary 1 next week and they are talking about bringing in assessment at that stage

+++++

That is just a crazy hair brained idea no doubt thought up by some kant who has had a sheltered upbringing

The looney right

No doubt Mick

I think most understand that the loony right and the loony left are just different sides of the same coin

I fcked up 5th year when I was at school.
I wasnt a bad kid, didnt drink or anything like that.....it was burds that distracted me from school work.

I flew through my standard grades with flying colours, thought this is a doddle, discovered the ladies and basically took my eye off the ball.

I re-sat a couple of those highers and came away from school with a decent haul and went to Uni to get the degree I wanted.....but in truth, its who I knew and work experience that has done the most for me in my career

The poor lad

but look on the brightside ....I mean i got rubbish results at school

look at me now ....
i can earn upto £50 in just one night - and if Frank is off unwell ...and you get to take his place at the main gloryhole in the dark room yer talking £65-70

so its not all bad news

He might not have got the Higher results he wanted but hard work and the right attitude will take him further than any result from school exams mate.

As you said, he still has 6th year to gain advanced highers so it's far from the end of the world.

Did they not change the marking criteria for Highers this year or last to make them harder?

Apparently so Juke, he was apparently just three % of an A in one of his exams. He seems to be coping well and saying the right things.

Just as an aside about St Andrews I've actually had two pupils over the past few years wanting to go there to study IR, it's notoriously difficult to get on to. Both times they didn't get offered a place on that course but had applied to do other courses at St Andrews. They started the other courses but did modules in IR in first year, then transferred onto that course in second year, places always become available because students fail first year or leave.

Congratulations to your young lad on getting four highers, lots of people don't manage that. Remember they're not the be all and end all, just stepping stones. Get in touch with the University, ask what they'll be looking for in a year, it's a safer bet than just assuming the guidance team in the school know what they're talking about.

Juke is on here giving life advice and on the Olympic thread criticising folk for using drugs

It's as if I have slipped into an alternate universe.

I know how to live a successful life.. just choose not to.

Well that's not strictly true, my lack of motivation eliminates any element of choice

Wumming aside I'd recommend it to anyone. I got fantastic trade knowledge and experience, seen the world, met so many friends from all walks of life.

However I would recommend not joining up until 19 or 20. Live life a bit first it will help massively in the first few years.

Aye it's one small regret I have Murney. Almost signed up but bottled it before I committed myself to basic training, would've knocked my lazy erse into gear

Saying that I've done alright as is. I've seen what the army can do though.. my cousin went in with nothing and was looking at a pretty hectic life, came out with a trade, managerial tickets for logistics/transport haulage, a wife and kid, a house, and a cushee pension.

That's just one example. I've got pals who were bumming about on the dole who are now posted across Europe making something of themselves. As much as I joke about squaddies and the forces in general, they're needed
