Our Captain Jordan Brian Henderson

I can see why they pick Hendo as captain. He is a level headed lad who is a good role model. He apparently always looks after the younger players in the squad in Melwood and doesn't drink drive, sleep with grannies or beat up his mrs etc.

Liverpool lack leaders right now so not many players better for the role.

On a footballing front we missed him when he was injured but I said last season his injuries seem to be taking their toll on him.

My only negative of him is he passes the simple ball too often and should take more risks and pass forward more than he does. I know his stats say he passes forward more than most players but he passes more than most and could be more direct in my eyes

I think once Naby Keita comes in, he loses his spot.
-------------------------------------------
Keita doesn't play the same position as Henderson.

He does not protect the two centre backs nor does he score or assist enough.
---------------------
It's not his job to score and I don't get where this idea that he doesn't assist comes from. Since 12/13 season he's had 27 assists, in the same time frame Coutinho has had 29 assists.

Modern English player, fast enough, brave, tall, good stamina but realistically is a very limited footballer. Some of his passing during the England games was an embarrassment for a captain playing centrally.
Huff and puff player that works hard for the team, most clubs have them and it can help when the chips are down. Walks into many other sides.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Three assists in his last three games.

Good article

He is an average utility player. He can occasionally pull a rabbit out of the hat but so can most PL footballers. He played well last season when you were dominant but he fades into obscurity when the chips are down.

Been saying it for ages. Lots of energy but limited abilities. Love his attitude but a squad player nothing more. Once Coutinho is back he should be dropped to the bench. Can't see inform players like Wijnaldum and Can making way. With the Ox and then Keita we have many options. Youngsters are developing well.

I hope we go for VVD and a new striker in January. If we get them and are close to the top then we will be very close figthing with the likes of Chelsea City and United for the title.

First off Brian is a horrible middle name.

second he's not a no 6 but playing at no 6.... therefore keita won't take his place

thrid and finally his game when fit and when not fit are night and day. Much depends on his fitness here.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
If he's not a 6 nor is he an 8. I know he has bags of energy and presses decent and can string a few good passes here and there but that's all. He's also been injured quite often of late.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
But who else will play no 6? Can will be gone

He is a good leader and motivator on the pitch, a great passer of the ball and has an excellent engine. He's also aggressive in the tackle. All things that make a good deep midfielder and captain, which he is for club and country.

Yes he isn't exciting so those who don't really understand that game won't agree with how highly he's rated by his peers but that's just the way it is.

You need to look at games from a tactical perspective. Especially when it comes to midfield play.

There are reasons our midfield comes out on top in big games beyond fifa style attributes.

Watch some tactical film studies on youtube and you'll see what hendo does in terms of pressing, positioning, distribution, defensive cover/protection, he blocks passing lanes incredibly well and is world class off the ball and recovering possession.

All this is key to our style...His stamina and fitness are a major asset considering our style of play.

Klopp knows what he's doing. Oppo fans laugh at hendo but he's usually instrumental in winning the big midfield battles against them.

He's Liverpool captain cos he gets a sweat on and shouts a lot
He's England captain cos Southgate is a clueless mug who thinks "I know, I'll copy what Klopp does cos he's flavour of the month"

He doesn't shout a lot. So.....

Have you not seen his party piece?

hendos okay, not amazing, but good enough, though if emre stays ill think he'll (hendo)be on the bench behind emre + keita, would still get loads of gametime

Anyone who can't see what Henderson brings doesn't really understand football. Sorry if that sounds arrogant but it's true.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Exactly mate. He usually plays at the base of midfield and drops into defence during build up play when our full backs push up yet they're going on about something else entirely. Its like listening to a woman talking about boxing for the first ........

Agree 100%. Hes never going to be world class but his defensive game is massively underrated.

Per 90 minutes last season he averaged more tackles, more blocks, more clearances, higher duel win percentage and less fouls than Kante.

I think Hendo is shiiit too but I bet you've not seen Keita play more than 3 times and Lemar isn't anything close to being a CM.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Lemar can play CM. Have you watched him play?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I've probably seen him play a total of 10 games (not being a Monaco fan) in the CL and for France, and he's been on the wing every time. Didn't see many attributes that lend themselves to a CM, didn't really notice him drifting inside that often into CM areas either.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He is good at pressing and also quick in the transition. Very good link up play with others and has a good shot on him. Plays quick forward passes too.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

He's played CM for Monaco before, even in a 2. Not much time granted but he has done. I think he can play in a 3, if one is Keita and the other is a Henderson/ Can type.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Fair enough then, I didn't know that. Will be interesting to see him if he does get that role for you, as I really rate him as a winger.

Good squad Klopp is putting together, especially if he comes next year along with Keita (even if Barca come back in for Coutinho).

Caaants.

Firstly, he's not an adopted scouser. Just look on this thread for the mixed view of him.

Secondly, I don't believe he'll lose his place to Keita. I think Wij will in our strongest 11. Midfield of Henderson, Keita, Lallana.

Thirdly, doesn't take risks? Just how many of our team do you want to take risks? The front 3 and AM all have license to take risks, now you want one (or maybe both?) of our CMs to take risks in their play as well?! Just not realistic I'm afraid. Klopp plays attacking football, he doesn't play suicidal football.

Henderson is an excellent football. Even when we first signed him and he was stuck out at RM, I was struck by how comfortable he was with 1 and 2 touch football. His technique is sound, he has fantastic energy and is a great fit for Klopp high press football.

What he needs is fitness. His last 2 seasons have been stop-start and that's a worry. If he plays all season I have no concerns about his quality.

He's just not a motd highlight reel type player so people think he's poor. He's really not.

In a nutshell

Not flashy enough for some bit his work ethic, engine and desire more than make up for it. Badly needs to stay for though as injuries have knocked him back a bit.

With the role he plays in our team, complaining about a lack of goals and assists (even if the assist complaint doesn't add up), is like complaining about Busquets, Kante, Casemiro etc etc.

Just a fundamental lack of knowledge of what the player is there to do.

He's going nowhere.
