Considering the lack activity on this board when there is no international break, this will be the first and last comment for the next two weeks.

Will scotland steal a top two finish?

No.

Here's something I thought might be interesting. I was thinking about how difficult it is to predict results in the championship so I did a comparison of the clubs, biggest to smallest, how much they have spent on players and where they are in the league after 11 games.
How do you classify a "big club" and a "small club"? Well for the purposes of this exercise I have used stadium capacity.

So the first figure is total market value of the squad (in millions of euros), the second figure is ground capacity and the third figure is current league position.

1 Sunderland 62.75 49,000 23
2 Aston Villa 84.75 42,788 7
3 Sheffield Wednesday 62.48 39,732 12
4 Leeds United 43.90 37,890 5
5 Middlesborough 86.80 34,742 11
6 Derby County 54.65 33,597 15
7 Sheffield United 10.73 32,702 3
8 Wolves 73.30 30,852 2
9 Nottingham Forest 30.95 30,602 13
10 Ipswich Town 21.10 30,311 8
11 Birmingham City 44.70 30,016 22
12 Bolton Wanderers 16.25 28,723 24
13 Cardiff City 39.00 28,000 1
14 Norwich City 52.75 26,034 9
15 Fulham 73.25 25,700 10
16 Hull 70.30 25,586 17
17 Preston 15.70 24,500 6
18 Reading 43.00 24,161 20
19 Barnsley 16.05 23,009 18
20 Bristol City 25.80 21,497 4
21 Millwall 9.85 20,146 14
22 QPR 40.75 18,439 16
23 Brentford 30.60 12,300 19
24 Burton 12.05 6,912 21

Everyone probably saw this at the time but if it slipped under your radar it's worth a look.

Didn't realise Burton's ground was so small, though we had rules against that sort of thing?

Ah, I see you created this thread specifically to in order to publish your research Gem. Nice work by the way. I'll be fecked if I can come to a conclusion based on the evidence mind you other than ground capacity and transfer outlay is not necessarily analogous to league position after 11 games?

Will be interesting to repeat the exercise at the end of the season though or go back and do similar for last season (admittedly this wont help with the prediction league!)

Cinci - I think football league rules dictate a capacity of 6000 minimum and 1000 seats. I believe Championship clubs have 3 seasons to comply with Premier League standards. Not such what their base standard is, but must be all seater at least.

I guess were Burton to get promotion, they would have to share with Derby or something until they could comply.

Their total ground capacity is less than the new Stan Cullis North Bank stand that seats 7,700

Correction - from safety at sports grounds website:

The Football League require that the ground occupied by a club promoted to League 2 must have a certified capacity of at least 4,000 (with the ability to be increased to 5,000) which shall include at least 500 seats (with the ability to be increased to 1,000).

By 1st May in its first season as a Member of the Football League the club is required to have a certified capacity of 5,000 which shall include at least 1000 seats(with the ability to be increased to 2,000).

By 1st May in its third season as a Member of the Football League the club is required to have a certified capacity of 5,000 which shall include at least 2,000 seats.

No I agree, it doesn't prove much except that most of the "big clubs" are currently mid table or lower whilst several of the "small clubs" are mid table or higher. That alone shows that spending multiple millions on players does not guarantee instant success which confirms what most of already know; it's not how much you spend that is important but rather who you spend it on.

And yes I agree that repeating the exercise at the end of the season could be very interesting.

I think it shows that no matter the quality you will run into plenty of poor teams bringing you down to their level with anti football styles and tactics.

Burton's ground is small and it wasn't full in the home areas on Saturday. So I'm not sure who would benefit from forcing them to make it bigger so they could have more empty seats. Although they could get bigger away followings in a few times a season. Although small it's a decent stadium and not the worst in the division. Brentford is certainly more in need of some investment as is qpr.

On a similar note to your stats gem I saw a league table recently which put all 92 league clubs in order if ground capacity from largest to smallest. Wolves have the 21st highest capacity so we're top of the championship. Albion were midway in the championship while Coventry were in the bottom half of the premier. Just a shame they only sell a third of the available tickets

But it's every citizen's right to bear arms so that's all right then

It'll never change Gem. There will always be nutcase's out there. The Constitution was written a long time ago and I'm sure if they knew then what would happen in today's crazy world, it may be different.

Handguns for protection is fine by me, but how you can justify having multiple weapons, especially automatics and the likes, needs to be addressed and doesn't make any sense to me.

But with this incompetent clown in charge over here, I doubt it'll ever be addressed.
