If the Leave campaign had gone with ‘The whole point of Brexit is radical supply side reform’ rather than £350m/week (outright lie) and curbing immigration, then I would have applauded their honesty.

I suspect the UK would have remained in the EU, though.

* I see that the govt sneaked out news on Christmas Eve that care workers are going to be added to the Shortage Occupations List due to what MAC describes as “severe and increasing difficulties” with shortages in the profession, allowing them to join EU farmhands, truck drivers and factor food workers interested in taking jobs in the UK.

Great analysis by Dmitry, btw WWSPD

They managed to hoodwink the electorate, but not the EU negotiators.

“Honestly, we can take the LFP stuff out, can’t we? We don’t really need it, do we? Between friends? Look, we aren’t interested in deregulation reeeeeally. Not reeeeally. We’ll just take the LFP rules out and agree between gentlemen that we’ll all stick with the spirit of healthy, safe and sensible regulation, OK? We trust each other don’t we? No?”

Meanwhile, between themselves they were rather talking about massive deregulation and tax cuts.

^ Here is my problem - you keep alluding to 'between themselves' as if a bunch of backbench MPs were a) the only authority on Brexit and b) the sole decision makers about our future direction.

We have the highest tax burden for seven decades, have committed obscene un-costed amounts of money to the green transition and are about to pour a truck load of money into NHS, and I keep hearing about this supposed deregulated hellscape overrun with free market fundamentalists....sorry what?

Weren't they though? They brought about the downfall of May and through their nationalistic bombast (from Cash, Bone to Corporal Francois) steamrollered through both the Brexit they wanted and created the Brexit election which the Tripe filled blonde won his massive majority.

I think that is an interpretation of events - for sure. However, the only reason 35-40 backbench MPs had such an influence over May was chiefly because the rest of the Commons couldn't agree to a Soft Brexit when they took control of the order papers. I also think that what Boris eventually agreed in the summer of 2019 was not really in line with the ERG at all - especially on Northern Ireland - where they would have much preferred 'No Deal'.

The 'Brexit Election' was created by:

a) Labour not honouring a referendum result
b) Sturgeon backing calls for an election to suit her own interests
c) Corbyn crumbling even though the opposition had the Tories in a vice in the House of Commons

and d) Boris Johnson wanted one

A lot of the problems were a result of the UK simultaneously negotiating with itself, and the EU.

Instead of firstly agreeing a negotiating mandate via Parliament, and in turn entering talks with the EU. The entire process was also overshadowed by a frenzied obsession of getting it done ASAP.

Resulting in an unscrutinised, bare-bones agreement which will be renegotiated/tweeked/amended for many years to come.

==========================================
It may be the highest tax-burden for 7 decades (& it'll be needed to pay for Covid), but it's still lower than most of our neighbours in northern Europe (most of whom also, as it happens, enjoy higher incomes, bigger houses, better pensions, better healthcare, & work fewer hours). But many elements of the Conservative party will be itching to get it down again, in line with the southern European countries.

The NHS money is nothing more than a Boris promise, as yet, made in order to 'Get Brexit Done'. He'll need the support of his back-benches to get it implemented, & the signals don't look good.

He's already had to rely on the support of the LP to get legislation through, & there's only so many times you can do that without facing a leadership challenge.

That's why Liz Truss is issuing cringeworthy pictures of herself in what she fondly imagines to be 'prime ministerial' poses. She wouldn't be doing that if Boris were on solid ground with the back-benches.

'Getting Brexit Done' entailed making a bunch of promises that the Conservative Party doesn't actually believe in (up to & including a de facto border in the Irish Sea), & the consequences of that will be played out for years to come.

You can pretend it's all representative of where the Conservative Party is right now, but until it actually materialises, it's just Boris p1ssing in the wind.

The Tories have dominated our political landscape since Atlee left office tbh, so I find claims of NHS underfunding or privatisation or secret plans to sell it off faintly ridiculous, especially when it was cultural radical Tony Blair who has come closer to privatisation than his right wing equivalents.

If you want to understand the Tory vote - rather than having a discussion about divergences in voting behaviour, the Red Wall, Brexit, spin, the media or whatever hobby horse any one of us likes to push - I am as guilty as the next person - I think the honest is the age.

It is the grey vote - that reality will determine much of their thinking over the medium term.

My uncle actually said today at dinner that "The EU was a good idea, until they started telling people that they couldn't eat straight bananas"

On Christmas my nan was getting all uppity exclaiming that "every country wants to leave the EU, even Germany" and my grandad was claiming that "The EU only exists as a way to conquer Europe because we beat them twice"

I can't actually wait until my uncle returns to Dorset after Christmas.. if I have to hear his racist terms much longer I'm going to lose my shiiit.

UK households face a hit of £1,200 next year as stalling wages and rising tax and energy bills cause a “cost of living catastrophe” in the spring, a leading thinktank has warned.

Government measures, including the new social care levy on national insurance and the freezing of the personal income tax allowance, will combine with high inflation to make 2022 the “year of the squeeze”, the Resolution Foundation said.

If you think public health is primarily a political issue then it is more, but imo, its straight forward, NHS is devolved so its on the relevant authorities.
