Sir John Curtice:
Labour wanted to demonstrate unambiguously they have made progress
They can rightly claim to have reached a new zenith of popularity in the capital
The trouble is outside London Labour’s share of the vote was actually down slightly

Reinforces the notion that Starmer has absolutely zero chance of winning an election too. Needs to go
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It was mainly Labour seats up for grabs and they've added 34 as well as gaining 3 councils, some of which have been Tory for the best part of 30 years.
They could have done a little better but seems rather bizarre to say it proves Starmer isn't electable when they've made gains

They already controlled half the council seats up for election, so gains were always going to be modest.
It's weird that Labour seems to be the focus for many when the Tories have lost over 100 seats with half the votes still to be counted.
Seems like Brexit still casts a shadow, with Northern leave areas not really shifting.
Always seems to be way Tam.
I have no idea how anyone could spin losing 120 seats and 6 councils at the halfway stage as an ok result for the Tory's.

After 12 years of government and the shambolic antics at Westminster Labour should be doing a lot better.
London a lost cause for the Tories anyway.
Still a bad night for the Tories either way
They were actually projected to lose seats in England though, with the gains coming in Scotland and Wales, so any gains in England is surely decent.

Interesting perspective.
The takes were always going to be "actually Labour winning lots of seats is a bad thing" and "well local elections don't really matter"
And here we are
Boris wants a leadership contest before more MET fines are issued and the Sue Gray report is published 👀
Probably gonna have a GE in autumn now
And if it’s true we are going into a recession I would love to know if our country is gonna be the only one to experience it. Would give the brexit argument great ammo.

Of course, quite frankly I can't believe a anybody went to the trouble to go out and vote Tory yesterday.
However after the colossal open goal Boris gave every other party for these local elections the others should be doing well.
Not sure when the Wakefield by election is but if the Tories lose then he's toast.
I wonder what the odds are for him mentioning the vaccination rollout when called to answer for Tory failings in the local elections?
