People saying they are proud to be English are completely missing the fact they are actually British and all the things they are 'proud' of were achieved as a feckin union.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Feck off you, I’m sick to death of people who pooh-Pooh people for celebrating being English. Hardly anyone calls out the other British nations for being proud of their country. I’m English first, British is a good distant 2nd.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Regardless, you are still British.

Oh fack off, knowing and acknowledging it is one thing, suggesting it should be viewed like Naaazi Germany is another and is absolute nonsense.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

To many people in the world they view it probably even worse than Germany (in India for example who suffered more under British rule than anything Germany did to them).

Or the people in concentration camps long before the naaazis ever used them. To many of the places the British empire went to around the world the crimes the empire committed will probably never be forgotten.

As for my ‘cover’ for Australia’s history with the indigenous people here - no cover at all. It is horrific but the worst of the genocide of the people was committed by the British.

Sadly (some) people in the UK don’t ever want to accept the British empire was for many people around the world the evil empire and there were many many many crimes committed under that flag. Which makes it very hard for some people to understand why people crow about the glorious past of the empire

There seems to be a certain element, possibly through envy, that seem to only emphasise the negative aspects of Britains' past.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

It doesn’t help that a huge swath of the country wont acknowledge that awful past - a past that is just as bad as any other historical ‘bad guy’ did. And when you see those Reform right wingers out there marching for ENGERLAND they don’t quite realise they would have been the cannon fodder in all those previous wars so that the rich folk could continue their hegemony.

I’m not sure who’s envious of Britain around the world tbh. There’s a lot of great history, don’t get me wrong but in an honest world they’d be seen by the world just as Naaazi Germany are now if the list of atrocities were taught honestly in school.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What a load of crap.

We can't deny the fact we colonised a third of the globe, by brutal means in some cases but we left a form of democracy and a judical system that's still in place today in dozens of countries. Some countries would have ordered a child to have his hand chopped off for stealing a loaf of bread, thankfully acts like that were outlawed.

We were one of the main benefactors of slavery but 191 years ago today, a law was passed that abolished it throughout the Empire - Many of our colonial peers were still using slave labour in their overseas territories well into the 19th century.

We gave the world railways which opened up whole continets to trade and travel, we built roads that opened up employment possibilities to millions and of course, we gave the world a language that is spoken universally.

Donald Trump has posted on Truth Social that he is ordering his team to fire Commissioner of Labor Statistics Erika McEntarfer "immediately".

It comes after today's job report, with new data showing jobs growth in the US in May, June and July slowed more sharply than previously understood - a worrying sign for the economy.

"I have directed my Team to fire this Biden Political Appointee, IMMEDIATELY. She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified," he writes.

Without providing evidence, Trump accuses McEntarfer of faking "Jobs Numbers before the Election to try and boost Kamala’s chances of Victory".

"Important numbers like this must be fair and accurate, they can’t be manipulated for political purposes," he says.

“She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified…”

That’s Dr. Erika McEntarfer, PhD in Economics from Virginia Tech, career academic economist (published in the Journal of Labor Economics, American Economic Journal: Macroeconomics, and the Journal of Economic Perspectives, etc.) and civil servant specialising in econometrics, who has previously led at the US Census Bureau's Center for Economic Studies, the Treasury Department's Office of Tax Policy and served on the White House Council of Economic Advisers.

Can’t wait to see what spotty 21 year-old he puts in charge.

Being proud of your country is an odd concept to me, not just England but any country, it's a strange concept.

Guess it's a bit like religion in the sense that it was once an important way to manipulate the people into being willing to give up their lives for something that divides them from their enemies? Both have/had genuine importance during war but now it's mostly used to stoke up racism and get people to vote against their own interests by manipulative politicians.

posted on 2/8/25

I don't think it has to be an odd concept at all but sadly for most they get hold of the wrong ideals when talking of being proud, we have seen it today. Daft comments like being proud not to be Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish for example. That is indeed a dividing reason.

You can be proud of our British sense of humour, it is pretty unique. The British pub, nowhere on earth comes close though sadly that seems to be dying out. British sporting heritage, we might be as a collective pretty shat at most of them but we brought most of them to the world. Despite some of the usual negative crap written here today Britain has done plenty to be proud of on a global scale as well.
