You guys really think the draw is going to be fair if it changes to a straight knockout tournament
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It will be if no one is seeded or gets protection which is how it should be if it were to ever revert to straight KO.

What needs to be done isn't tampering with the CL format, it's player wage caps, its not rocket science.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Societal wage/earnings caps, not just for players
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Don't let the workers take home the cash they generated. Let the owners keep it
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Cap the owners, cap everyone in the world.

I've got a nice cap with a big written D on it.

I wanna watch the best players in the world play the other best players in the world.
CL offers that perfectly.
Apart from the defensive managers like Jose & Simeone...need to get rid of them.

Yep, and that's why they get away with it.
However, this means that fans of big clubs who are not regarded as the elite in the eyes of Uefa will stand little or no chance of ever breaking through, so competition is effectively dead.
Great, so you'll be happy with the european super-dooper league
Man Utd
Real Madrid
PSG
Barcelona
Bayern Munich
Man City
They can play each other home and away then the players can have a nice long rest because it's so tiring being so brilliant.

Think any team that lacks the enormous financial advantages of the premier league or psg etc..can be classed as little, as they are royally up against it.
Even a Dortmund and Atletico can be classed as little compared to the PL clubs and PSG etc

Yep, that way super fantastic brilliant managers like Klopp might stand half a chance of winning something
The competition is fine the way it is, having the champions go in as top seeds as seen some big teams drawn together in the groups, which can be interesting.
Also, a team slogs it out, all season to qualify for the CL then could be out after two games? It's a bit sh*t for the fans, at least with a group stage you get to have a full European experience, not play once, lose 4-0 at home to PSG then you effectively out before it's even begun.
One thing I would change about European football is the away goals rule, when games were drawn (after a replay) they would draw lots to see who went through, then it was away goals then penalty shoot-outs came in in 1970.
So away goals should have been scrapped there and then because they found a way to settle a drawn game.
It's ridiculous we still have and the team who play away in the 2nd leg as a big advantage in that they could get an extra 30 minutes to find the goal, also, why should one goal count "more" than another?

It isn't just that. You'll see more of the big teams in tougher situations and playing each other.
It's all well and good playing another big side in a group where you both expect to qualify and don't leave 2nd gear. Teams would need to be on the ball from game 1 in order to win it.
the CL is a european league substitute. pure and simple. the groups are staving off big clubs cutting and running to their own mega european league.
really simple.
the top 8 or 16 don't care its really easy to get through.....
You already have many qualifiers. No way will they do what the op suggested.
the top 8 or 16 don't care its really easy to get through.....
..............................
I'd like them to go their own way, toodles, see how much interest they'd attract after the novelty wore off.
Reading through this I'm probably in the minority but I like the CL the way it is.
Mini-league format means the best teams qualify almost every time (couple of exceptions for tough groups but not many) and then the top 16 teams go head to head in knockout football.
Means we get a good participation from across the continent in the group stages but when the competition gets to the sharp end it's knockout stuff with the 16 best teams. Sounds good to me.
Knockout would be entertaining but I doubt you'd see as many top class quarters, semis and finals as the current format. Example - how many smaller sides have made the CL final in recent years? Atletico Madrid perhaps? Dortmond in 2013? Arsenal in 2003 ?
Compare that to knockout football and the FA Cup; in the last few years we've had Palace, Hull, Villa, Wigan, Stoke, Portsmouth - all make the final. The simple reason for that is that big clubs can draw each other early and knock each other out.
As I said, I think it works as it is.
Can Solo (U6997)
Do you think it's fair to fans of clubs such as Palace, Villa, Wigan etc. that the competition is structured in such a way that it makes it virtually impossible for them to reach a final?
Good for the fans of big teams, good for revenues, bad for competition.
Easy for the fans of our big clubs to be fine with it, but I think we forget how uncompetitive football is becoming for the fans of these reasonably big clubs, who start the season knowing they are unlikely to do anything other than strive for a top half finish.
It flat out favours the rich, no one else.
