VAR discredited big time tonight

Ridiculous that they still got it so wrong despite the use of technology, that guff they showed on TV was ridiculous. Why not just show the view from straight down the line?

Honestly can’t figure out wtf they’re thinking

If he was offside it was marginal

They should be giving the attacker the benefit of the doubt. The problem is that they will be inconsistent with these calls and more often than not the attacker won’t get the advantage

Why should they be giving the attacker the benefit? I’ve never got that saying. Imagine in tennis. Ooo the ace is only just out but we will give the server the benefit of the doubt. It’s supposed to be by the rulebook

Wasn’t wrong decision but even Poch said implementation of the tech isn’t quite right

Chelsea angle is a frame or two after the ball has been kicked too.

Would take the official impartial view as the correct one

Benefit of the doubt was acceptable when we were relying on linesman calls but not when using technology.

He was offside simple as that.

The angle they used was hilarious.

Anyone have an image of the other offside view? I've only seen the one where he looks marginally onside.

VAR is there to help referees who ultimately are the ones making the final decisions. Blame the poor refs in the league, no the technology.
You could give me an assisted flying jet, still I wouldn't be able to fly it. Nothing to do with the onboard computer, just me.

Morata didn't get the benefit of the doubt against Southampton, He was onside.

You'll say it's swings and roundabouts but actually it's not.. it could cost us a CL place and a Cup final place. Disgrace.

To be fair, the point he’s making about the technology is that it doesn’t provide an angle directly in line, therefore said technology isn’t providing an accurate view of the play.

Having looked at a few stills from other angles you can see the issue here.

There are two issues that make problems for VAR highlighted in this game. The way the offside rule is at the moment based on body shape and players not playing to the whistle.

If they are going to use lines on the pitch to judge from the closest possible angle that is never always going to be straight then simply change the offside law back to how it was before.

Players need to be reminded that assistant refs are called this for a reason and raised flags are for the benefit of refs not the players.

The technology is incorrectly designed for making offside decisions. Would anyone accept an acute angle radar beam o whatever they use for the goal line technology? Its utterly absurd that they would accept it for offsides

I don’t think it’s swings and roundabouts at all. Never believed that shiiiit never will

Having seen the other pictures from a different angle it’s not even close and it was a definite offside. Surely the VAR officials have these pictures before making a decision

Just playing devils advocate here but in the last month we've had three goals chalked off, were we've said the attacker should be given the benefit of the doubt.

If Kane was deemed onside there, then all three of those goals of ours should have stood.

I agree with both your points, but I also believe that unless VAR can guarantee an inline view for offside decisions then it is useless as a tool for making offside decisions

posted on 8/1/19

What needs to change for VAR to be completely effective in the matters is for the offside rule to be changed to when the foot is placed. That was the issue with the decision today.

The any part of the body rule was brought in to help the linos as if they are partially unsighted but can see the body it makes their job easier. VAR eliminates the need for that.

Its funny but not strange that after the goal, Spurs performance noticeably declined, looked nervous and losing the ball a lot. And we upped ours , in fact looking much sharper and certainly the more accomplished team on the pitch. I do not think most Spurs fans enjoyed watching this match at all despite scoring, whereas the Chelsea fans have more reason to be optimistic in the return fixture.
