Also I have 4 bikes so am doing 4x as much as you are to tackle climate change.

I've got three kayaks. Do they count?

I've got one and a dinghy. We should do an experiment. I cycle along by the canal whilst you paddle your kayak and we measure who reduces more global warming.

I'll bring my jet ski

That's cheating. Everyone knows that they emit water out the back so help solve drought. Can't compete with that.

Berba, I ride my bicycle to work most days too!
==============

I'd take my comment back Dave but I'm in full Stretty-mode for personal kicks so I'd best just double down with something even more inane than the last.

You're a farmers league environmentalist. Nonce.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
!!!

In all seriousness, I know where you're coming from. I've had that debate with quite a few of my peers.

It might be noncey rationalisation, but I've crunched the numbers and I've been able to make a FAR more positive impact improving parts of a bad system at both local community level and International political legislation than anything else I can do.
=================

Which brings me onto....

When the IPCC put out their '12 Year' warning, it was on the BBC homepage for about half of the day. By the evening it wasn't on the home page. By 10.02pm that evening, the story wasn't even in the Top 10 most read stories of the day on the BBC website (I have the screen shot to prove it).

Point being, the public are simply not be allowed to understand or grasp the severity and imminence of the problem. This should be headline news every single day, but isn't. I've long since argued that concentrations of media ownership & proximity to the state is the single biggest obstacle to systemic change. I'd highly recommend 10 minutes reading this:

I'm sure companies would happily do the same if it didn't mean going bankrupt.

Sadly, there will always be some people/companies that will do absolutely anything to make just that little bit more money.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Unfortunately those people are pulling political strings.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Then I return you to the comment I made earlier about the nature of the market:

Supply is dictated by demand.

No government or corporation can force us to buy a Volkswagen, Dyson or Aberdeen Angus steak, holiday in the Canaries, or turn the AC on.

The power - and actually the responsibility - is in our hands, not the politicians, business moguls or other vested interests.

We can just say, "No!"

And nobody can stop us from doing so.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Heard of advertising? Also you are giving the general public a bit too much credit.

"We can just say, "No!" "

by this you mean yourself and others you know who are educated on the matter and think in a certain way. You make up a small percentage of the population.

Gambling seems like a stupid idea. Smoking, stupid idea. These kind of things have more obvious, first hand consequences for people, yet they still do them.

People are idiots

He needs to hold the iphones while drowning them as if you don't film something then what's the point of even doing it.

That is all correct bar one thing... government subsidies and taxation.

Your average family is going to buy 4L of subsidised milk over 1L of, say, almond milk at a similar price. They are also going to keep buying stuff in cheap, plastic containers for as long as the government don't take the companies for using these type of packaging.

If everything was a level playing field, i'm sure more people would make more ethical choices.

Overpopulation can be exaggerated sometimes. It is natural progression of our society and of course it is also natural progression that it hits a peak with development and then population actually decreases for a given cohort. The population growth rate for the whole world continues to decline each year although I believe we are still decades away from being population neutral worldwide.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is one of the most dangerous opinions around.

For each set of people to reach a level of education, tech, security and wealth they so far have had to become massive contributors to climate damage.

By the time the population levels off (if it does) the world will be completely destroyed

I got refused a sale when I went to wherever it is you buy them, because they needed the dates between which I had a North Face jacket, and before that the dates between which I had a Superdry jacket. Needed 5 years worth of proof that I had them at the exact times that they were what I was meant to have. Failed by one week on the North Face jacket. Also little bit of a heads up, don't even think about going into the shop and trying to buy one without an iphone. You'll be shown the door immediately.

You are absolutely right, of course. As I said above, we need all of population control, technology, regulation and personal responsibility to stand a fighting chance.

I am trying to push the latter a bit harder, because it's the most obvious and easy one for us plebs in the developed world to effect, and also in no small part because I'm fed up of hearing people say, "What I do won't make any difference - governments and companies need to act," when what they actually mean is, "My day-to-day would be slightly more inconvenient or uncomfortable if I had to make any real effort to consider my impact on the environment."

Hi OP,

Interesting article !

You may recall that I mentioned the other day I'm also reluctant to have children for the same reasons as others' have stated. So, I may never end up with great-grandchildren to leave a hospitable planet to live on.

In the interim, I'm doing a few little things to help such as recycling, etc.

As for sacrifices, I've sacrificed many hundreds of thousands of dollars salary and lost a smoking hot gf (found a better replacement so not so sad) by making a sea-change. I've devoted most of the last decade of my life to develop and teach novel biotechnologogical processes to improve sustainability of a myriad of aquaculture fisheries species throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

I've helped remove a species of endangered fish from International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species and also helped raise some impoverished S.E Asian coastal communities from poverty in an ecologically sustainable manner.

Still plenty more to do, but every little bit helps.

Definitely giving the general population too much credit. They literally do not care what is good for themselves, hence McDonalds and Coke etc being so successful. They are not willing to take personal responsibility for their own health. Why would they take personal responsibility for something that they do not understand or care about? To control a mass of stupid people (I'm not sure what the collective term is, a pile maybe) you just need to forcibly take things away from them. A baby is not just going to give you its rattle. But the baby is not going to want the rattle in the first place if it doesn't know about the rattle.

Interesting discussion lads.

My only issue is that often when we look at this topic we don't have the full picture.

So for example someone mentioned India before in terms.of pollution. But (and I forget the details so people may need to look it up) the air travel pollution in India isn't from India necessarily but how India lies in the world. America may have more planes taking off and landing but the pollution may end up elsewhere (if that makes sense?)

Also if it's true, then owning a dog has a higher carbon footprint than having a car

Over population for me isn't an issue, a bloke with 10 kids in Africa won't necessarily have the same footprint as a couple in say UK. Simple things like them pooing in a field is better than us flushing ours into the sea etc.

And the biggest factor is stuff we don't think about. The wars currently happening are polluting in a way that may be irreversible or certainly take a long time. Nasa missions and satellites for our phones etc have created a scrapyard in space etc

Species's obliteration can be down to "green measures" in the long term. So the replanting if certain trees seems like a plan but the replacements are often trees not conducive to all the "life" in that area but we feel good about doing our bit.

Now I'm sure people will disagree etc, and that's fine but my point is we need to look at a collective not simply recycling plastic (incidentally anyone seen/heard how a lot of that is governmental rather than Joe bloggs? In that our govts are happier to export our krap to places knowing full well they just dump it. So us dilligently putting stuff in the right colour bins etc becomes somewhat pointless so the govt can save a few pounds)

Yea, it's a weak excuse in general. I can empathise with people in that you can live your absolute best life in terms of the environment and feel even more deflated by the excesses that are evident around us.

But it is also easy to see where your own personal efforts can influence many, many people who can make genuine change. The internet has made this happen a whole lot quicker too.

What sacrifices are people making in their everyday lives to help ensure their grandchildren's children have a hospitable planet to live on?
—————————

Small things really. I don’t eat red meat. I can drive but don’t own a car and use trains for work. I buy bottled drinks as infrequently as I can. Obviously I recycle, for what it’s worth. I’m sure there is more.

Most importantly, though, I’m not having children or grandchildren
