Is this ageing thing only limited to City players? Both squads will age by a year. Given that city couldn’t field their best player for a full season I can’t imagine the ageing of Silva will mean much if KDB is fit. Fernandinho’s replacement has been signed. An old Kun is still the best striker in the league.

Kompany is more a loss off the pitch than on it. Can’t think of any other old players.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Obviously every side ages a year. But City have some key players that are already on their way. I believe we only have four players over 30 and none of them are first choice.

You’re clinging on to a misnomer if you think that Citys squad is ageing.

Yes a couple of players who have been key for City are reaching the twilight of their careers, but to equate that to a justifying comment that says City’s side is ageing is just silly.

It’s simply not an issue.

posted on 30/6/19

Yes I should have said a few key players instead of the side in general.

posted on 30/6/19

3 key players over 30.

1 is leaving at the end of this season.

2 are still at the top of their game.

Replacements are already in place for all 3.

That leaves about 15/16 players who despite winning multiple trophies, haven't even reached their prime yet.

Fernandinho/his replacement would be the biggest concern. His presence is clearly missed when he's not playing and will his replacement have the same effect?

Replacing a successful player - A player that suits your system to a tee, is never easy.

Liverpool players must have a painting in the attic if they do not age.

City have lost Kompany but will buy a younger replacement, Otamendi may go but not a first choice, Silva has replacement in place and KDB should play this season. Little Fern has a replacement en route but Gundogan can cover and we all know about Bravo. Kun is still the best. Not an ageing squad but you keep grasping those straws and dreaming of that Treble that City made history with.

In fairness while City are an incredible side they do require some patching up through signings - there is always a decent chance those signings won't be as good as the players who came before.

Liverpool have a younger squad that's not as good as Cities in several places but it's not on the decline without signings

Yeah are you're not wrong

Personally though I feel it's still more likely that City will repeat a similar massive points total than Liverpool matching last year.

It was an incredible season by Liverpool last year and it seems unlikely they'll be able to match that. It's certainly possible but rarely have clubs put in back to back seasons like that (in fact only City have)

The main part of City's squad is very young. Foden a teenager, Sterling, Zinchenko, Jesus, Sane, Bernardo and Mendy are early twenties, Stones and Laporte are 25. KDB 28 and Walker 29. Only Fernadinho, David Silva and Kun are over 30 of the main players and midfield is an area of strength so I hardly think the City squad is creaking with old age. These are the guys that have scored 200 PL goals in 2 seasons, 198 points in that time and made history with the only domestic treble so I am not overly worried, especially as they did that without Mendy and KDB for most of last season. Liverpool will have to strengthen midfield especially as Jimmy Milner must be using his bus pass to get to training.

Because it is the mark of the best PL team of all time? Real history makers. Liverpool can proudly claim that they finished 1 point behind a team that won all 3 domestic trophies in a season.

Liverpool have lost only 6 PL games in 2 seasons, have reached 2 consecutive CL finals, and are European Champions.
Not really sure how it's unlikely that Liverpool can maintain their performance levels.

The bookies have City as odds-on favorites, with Liverpool second between two- and three-to-one.

That’s despite an avalanche of money already being heaped on Liverpool.

It’s pretty obvious which side the industry thinks are very clear favorites.

Spurs had a mare of a season last year, still managed to finish in a CL spot and reach the CL final, despite not spending a penny, having no home ground for most of the season, and having their worse injury crisis in living memory.

This season will be playing at home for the whole season for the first time in three seasons, will spend big, and hopefully will have a lot less injuries. A very powerful recipe for success.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Spurs had their best season in my living memory and you are trying to play it as a mare of a season?

Also, you had a home ground for the entire season. Wembley was your home ground for a lot of it, so that comment is factually incorrect. What difference does it make where you play your home games?

Treble winners sounds better still. Champions League is won every year but only one team has won all the domestic game can provide. Treble baby. 198 points. 200 PL goals. Never been done. That is the mark of the best ever team.

Winning a treble is always wonderful, we know we've won 2 or 3 trebles in our time, but without the champions league being one of the 3 it's always a lesser treble.

European champions though, well that always sounds like you've achieved the pinnacle of success..

Winning the world club championship actually sounds like you’ve reached the pinnacle of the game.

Sarcasm aside, Bombia makes a valid point. One team will win the Champions League every year.

The English domestic treble has never been attained before. How long until it is ever attained again?

It’s quite funny having this particular discussion though.

City and Liverpool fans could have actually chosen to rub their success in the faces of United fans. Instead of trying to diminish the success that the other has achieved.

Sure, because playing at home is an advantage. That advantage would, for the most part, extend to home games that were played anywhere in the local area.

For Anfield in particular; a lot of the perceived advantage would be based on the history and reputation of the stadium (magical european nights etc) which wouldn't apply to a new stadium.

I cant see any real logical argument that would suggest any difference to sours home ground being Wembley or the new stadium. The main arguments I can think if would be:

Large home crowd for support and potentially sway decisions (this is exactly the same at either ground. Jn fact Wembley has a bigger capacity? And so would be better for this).

Familiarity with the pitch and stadium (players only play on the pitch during home games and so it would take years for them to be as familiar at the new stadium as they were at Wembley. Also modern pitches are all perfectly kept and so there are less differences to learna and get used to).
