Do you reckon it's too much to expect to get through these two overs with all our wickets intact?

Wishful thinking mate

15-2 at stumps

15 off 2 overs? Not likely.

Oh sorry thought there were about 6 or 7

You can't overlook the importance of losing Jimmy too. Not only did we lose his wicket-taking ability when conditions were still bowler-friendly, but it also meant the other bowlers had to shoulder their share of his overs. Clearly some tired legs out there by the evening session.

Maybe so. I seriously doubt they'd have picked him if they'd thought there was a real risk he'd only manage 4 overs though. By all accounts he's injured a different part of his leg to his previous injury so it's not like it's a recurrence that could've been predicted.

Comfortable in the end

Pretty disappointing

When they were 8 down we should have looked to bowl them out for 150.

Shocking to let them score that many

Always going to be difficult when you lose your best bowler. The ball stops swinging the seamers become tired and there’s no rashid for a bit of mystery spin for the tail.

Like I say, Anderson went off, the ball stopped moving so much and the other bowlers got tired having to bowl Jimmy's overs.

And you really can't legislate for a batsman like Smith. He's an absolute animal, there really isn't an obvious way to get him out besides just waiting in hope for a mistake.

Have to say I think we will struggle to match their score unless the weather is good tomorrow - even then I wouldn't be so sure

Smith is a problem though, we don't have a plan to get him out other than hoping he misjudges one eventually.

Got to bear in mind our batting is sheite too though, so we could easily still end up with a first-innings deficit.

Moeen needs to get runs to prove his worth in the team hes batting at 8 ffs.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not sure why you're so anti Moeen for. The whole past week you've constantly been slating him!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He's an "all rounder" who can't bat or bowl. Doesn't deserve his place at all but keeps getting picked.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He was arguably England's player of the year in 2017. His bowling has been alright. He's taken 170 odd test wickets in 5 years which is not bad at all! Just because he's not taking 5 wickets every game does not mean he can't bowl! His batting will come good this series. There's no question about that.

Nonsense. Sorry. I don't care how good he was 2 years ago. It's the 2 years since I'm more concerned with. He has no form with bat or ball, constantly throws his wicket away and is a massive target for good batsmen who can milk him because he's so lacking in threat. He's gone steadily backwards in both disciplines and now offers no reliable runs (in fact he's one of the least reliable bats in the team considering how bad he is for chucking his bat at anything even when we're under the cosh), no control and only questionable wicket-taking threat. Oh, and he's a pretty bad fielder too.

We'd be so much better off with a proper spinner like Leach instead of kidding ourselves that Moeen offers enough with bat or ball to justify his place. Players aren't all-rounders just because they can do both full stop. They're meant to be good at both. Moeen is good at neither.

I think he’s much more of an attacking threat in home tests. 12 wickets and and a batting average of 30 last time there was a home series (v India). He normally comes alive a bit more in the 2nd innings so there’s not much point digging him out after day 1.

posted on 1/8/19

To be fair I was criticising his selection before the test began. I'm not having a go at him for not bowling the Aussies out on day 1, not at all. My issue is mainly with his cavalier, brainless batting. When he's out for the umpteenth time to short balls this series I'll be saying the same thing.

posted on 1/8/19

Let the AUSSIES off the hook badly, had a real opportunity to make a statement today, stick it into them, missed out, the Aussies in a similar situation would have hammered us, why Root stuck all the fielders on ropes I have no idea, needed to attack, Root showing weakness, Aussies right in this now

posted on 1/8/19

Think we have more important issues than Mo being uncomfortable against the shorter ball.

Get ready, they will be chinmusiced tomorrow. This is 5-0 , difference is this time its at their own backyard

Fantastic performance by England after losing a main bowler so early.

Bowlers were bound to get tired and any moaning is just stupid.

Tired, still 4 days to go, let the Aussies back in, expect them to take advantage of this

Tired after a day bowling with one bowler short.

They’ll recover during England’s innings.
