I dunno, I’ve never really been impressed by Periera at senior level. He just doesn’t do much. It was the same in Spain from what I saw and read about him, so it’s difficult to lay too much blame on Mourinho. I just don’t think he’s a particularly assertive character, and that shows in his game, as he has good technical ability but doesn’t do much with it.

Someone once posted a link of a game he had in Spain (Grenada, I think) showing about ten minutes of his highlights.

None of it amounted to a goal being scored or a goal assist. Everything resulted in nothingness.

Sounds about right. Though I’m not even that bothered about his goal contribution. It’s his lack of impact on moving the game forward into the danger areas that bother me. It’s not like he doesn’t have the ability to receive it and progress forward with a dribble or a pass. He’s just so timid.

“Conviction” is the word that comes to mind when I watch Pereira. He lacks conviction. There was a moment in the first half at Saints where someone teed him up on the edge of the box. He was happy to take a side-foot shot even though the defender, who’d had to commit, was clear favourite to block it. A cannier or more ruthless player might have (I’m not advocating diving) tried to draw the foul. That might be harsh - I only saw that incident once but that’s how I saw it. When he did actually go in the front foot against Chelsea, he beat a man and whipped in a cross and Martial scored the clincher.

Yeah I’d agree with that as well. Maybe it’s just me but I usually associate the word conviction with a player’s impact in the final third, and as I’ve mentioned it’s not even my issue with him.

To take an extreme example, but Iniesta actually lacked conviction in the final third. His lack of goal contribution in his career in comparison with the best around is an example of that. However, everything else he did, particularly his ability to transition the attacks for Barca and Spain made him an unbelievably valuable footballer.

If Periera could actually help us in transition without having any conviction I wouldn’t even be that bothered. But he doesn’t do that either. He’s basically a really pointless player.

It is just nothingness with him.
