Mate you're a Liverpool fan, you're obviously being biased here.

Until other players start scoring 40+ goals a season, this award is Messi's or Ronaldo's. That's all there is to it. Just because we're desensitised now to how incredible what they do is, it doesn't change the fact that they still are on another level.

Being biased how? Im not sure you know what biased means.

As said if you cant understand why VVD may win it Im of the opinion you dont know the game.

I'm saying Van Dijk shouldn't win it because Messi deserves it more. You keep trying to use tricky wording, but that's all I'm saying.

Having said that, and he's been impressive. I just can't look past messi for Ballon d'or.

36 goals and 13 assists in 29 starts last season in a crap barca teamguys a joke.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
you would think he played for stoke ffs.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
a crap barca team. hardly.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s their worst team in over a decade. What u struggling to understand?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
still set up to help messi score goals. their worst team in a decade isn't a weak team. you struggling?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I said “a crap Barca side” not a crap side...

it's probably too late in his career but i'd love to see messi play in the pl. it would certainly give a good indication of just how good he is from a different perspective.

Messi is the best player in more than one position, he’s been the best striker, the best assister, the best playmaker, the best free kick taker.

VVD has not been man of the match in half as many games as Messi has last season.

VVD has been great, Messi has been comfortably better than everyone else in terms of his performances as a player.

It’s also harder to score goals than it is to stop them. Hence poorer teams shutting up shop rather than going gung ho.

pride, liverpool don't shut up shop though so vvd isn't just another bus part. he's the best defensive player in a very offensive team.

You missed my point. It’s harder to score a goal than it is to stop a player scoring one.

I’m not taking anything away from VVD, he’s had a very good year. He just hasn’t had as good a year as Messi.

no i agree with your point i just think its not that easy to defend when the team is not set up to play a deep lying style.

Saying its harder to score goals than stop them is an incredibly reductive statement. Fact is VVD's influence, leadership and organisation has played a large part in Liverpool being propelled into a top five team in world football and thats on top of his actual skills.

That's why he's being considered.

Some of the arguments here are hilarious.

So its harder to score goals and stop them and by that logic no defender should even win an award.

VVD stats over the last 18 months have not been seen before in the game. He's not even been dribbled in that time playing in the best league in the world and in a team that plays awe inspiring attacking football with flying and in experienced full backs. He brings it all together and controls it like Michelangelo doing the Sistine ceiling.

Is VVD doing anything we haven't seen before?

Yes.

For a defender to not give away anything for as long as he has is unheard of.

It's not, the bar has just been lowered since there aren't so many top CBs around anymore.

Its harder to defend now as attackers are far more protected.

=====
The absence of top centre backs cannot be used to explain away why VVD has not given anything away for such a long time.

VVD not giving anything away for so long is not dependent on the presence or absence of top centre backs in the game.

Furthermore, VVD is playing in an age where there are more brilliant attackers than defenders and still he shines, which must be easier said than done.
