I’ve never really wanted to presume their intentions given I cannot even comprehend the psychological impact of what they went through in any of it - the loss of their daughter, the police investigation or the media scrutiny afterwards.

Sympathy and empathy are different things though. I’m a father of three and I would never do what they did. I know people that have though.

Winston, I'd recommend having a read through all the different chapters on the website that I'd linked to. I'd not seen it before, but it raises a lot of valid questions about the Mccanns version of events and the many discrepancies. And also that of the other adults present that evening. There is plenty to suggest that at the least the Mccanns told a few porkies to make themselves look less culpable.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll take a look.

The issue I have is the rather large leap from finding some of their account a bit odd to thinking they were involved.

I'm aiming that at you, but this thread in general.

i cant believe Robb is actually trying to justify it and make it less severe than it is by saying they were only meters away and having a drink.

honestly thought he had more about him than that
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Really? You give him too much credit.

Robb isn’t a parent so doesn’t understand or care about the opinions of people who are. If you haven’t realised how low he will stoop to win an argument you haven’t been paying attention.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I have to say VC, I do agree with you about him not being a parent.

Until you have your own children and understand what that feels like to be responsible for them, I don't see how you can really give a balanced view on how negligent the McCanns were. And they did it most nights I think? Absolutely terrible parenting.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You and are something else.

Why would a person without kids not understand how it feels to take care or feel a strong love or worry about another human or living being??

Bunch of fecktards...thinking out are better than someone else because you have kids. Self entitled eejits.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
For me the love you have for your children and the responsibility you feel for them is unlike any other connection. I can only assume you don't have kids if you don't understand that.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That doesn't mean everyone without kids would happily put one in the bin without a flicker of emotion.

Like I said, you can have children, think they were negligent and still have complete empathy for them. They aren’t mutually exclusive positions.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't disagree with that. I personally have little sympathy for them, as aside from the terrible parenting, I think that they put their own image ahead of the investigation. I believe that they lied in order to make themselves appear less culpable then they really were. As a result there were inconsistencies in their version of events, which understandably made the police suspicious and saw them focus their attention on the parents. That's almost as bad as leaving the kids alone to start with for me.

But I do think it is difficult to understand just how bad their parenting was if you don't have kids of your own. Imagine leaving kid alone again after she had told you that she had woke up the night before crying. How can you leave her alone again in a strange room, knowing that she might wake up and be scared? And not only did they leave her again, but they were an hour between either of them laying eyes on her.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Did you have nieces or nephews before you had kids, and ifnsondidnyou not feel protective over them?

Yes, I actually had 11 nephews/nieces before my eldest was born. I now have 14 in total. And yes, I felt/feel protective of all of them. But it isn't the same as being a parent.

I don't think people are going to change their minds here but I can't help feel people are judging the McCann's on the consequences of their actions rather than the actions themselves. I reckon thousands of people have done similar things on holiday without any consequences.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Thousands of people drink drive every week without consequences. But when an innocent child does because of it they are rightly vilified

Not the best example

It’s more like if a parent was speeding and then a drunk driver crashed into them and killed one of their kids.

No it isn't. Because speeding doesn't in any way facilitate the drink driver to get behind the wheel and cause the crash.

But your example puts far more blame on the parents. Them being ‘drunk drivers’ is a far bigger contribution to a death than what they actually did.

A chief of police said that a Portuguese couple that had done the same would have been charged with abandonment. The former head of internal affairs said that same. So I would be extremely surprised it there hasn't been a similar incident at some point over the years.
