I rewatched Wolf of Wall Street again the other night. How he didn’t get the Oscar for that I do not know. The movie isn’t quite as great as some remember but his performance is superb.

I cant think of any films in which he wasn't brilliant.

It's sadly pretty accurate. Bought and paid for politicians, moronic public fed by a complicit media with all problems leading back to those with the most money / attempting to become the most wealthy.

The world as we know it going out with a huge but quick bang from a giant meteor however would be far more pretty than the long drawn out reality of mans self inflicted demise.

I just feel sorry for the rest of the species we're taking down with us!

Yeah, the last few years has shown us how far we have fallen as a race. Selfishness has reached unexpected heights. I have never had a high opinion of the human race but man i was seriously underestimating just how many cants we are surrounded by.

I thought it was brilliant. Probably not one for the right wingers because they are getting mocked.

Leonardo is superb as ever. He has to be the greatest actor of all time now.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think you completely missed the point of the movie. 😂

Agree that Leo is an awesome actor though.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

It was mainly mocking the right - be they Trumpists who didn’t believe in climate change or Covid etc. But the poking of the left was of the billionaires like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg who think they can solve the worlds problems in their own deluded and selfish ways. It had something for everyone but it was predominately a mirror to the face of US Politics and Silicon Valley over the past few years.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In what universe are small state, serial tax dodging, disaster capitalists Musk and Zuckerberg “on the left” ?

posted on 31/12/21

The film isn’t really about lampooning the right (or the left).

Its primary message is about an infantilised, distracted and capricious society obsessing itself with pop culture and social media and failing to understand or engage with science, the scientific method, and the scientific community.

I think you’re wrong with the first bit, as it ties in with your second point. I think there’s a pretty big reference to how politicians at times ignored, and still do, the scientific advice given to them about Covid, purely because of self interest.

I thought it was good, many I’ve spoken to didn’t get it, I guess you need to kee up with world politics and such to understand.

I do think Di Caprio was wasted in this movie.

posted on 31/12/21

The best bit of the film was the bit that came after the credits. The rest was 2 and a half hours of sheiteness.

I suspect he thoroughly enjoyed making it….

How was Di Caprio wasted? He been very open about his views on climate change for some time and this was a film that he clearly felt could broaden that view to the masses. Great actors don’t have to always play big characters, that’s part of what makes them great actors.

Also, how stupid are your friends if they didn’t get it?

I don’t deny that it goes after politicians; just that it isn’t fundamentally specific about right wing or left wing politics, per se.

It’s attacking politicians who listen to the wrong people, for the wrong reasons, and as a result make the wrong choices.

I think from there we can make our own minds up about which politicians we’ve seen in recent years ignore the scientists in favour of the polls, self-interest, lobbyist influence, and/or their donors.

(And yes, Trump and his administration are very, very obvious candidates.)

The use of the meteor scenario I thought abstracted the argument quite well. It helped make it clear that the film’s message was wider than climate change; and it’ll apply everywhere we (egos collectively) fail to listen to science and reason.

Yeah, can’t argue with any of that. You’d like to think it’ll make more people question what they’re sold/told by politicians. Though sadly I doubt it’ll reach those that are firmly entrenched in someone like Trumps ideology.

I don’t know how many times I’ve told anti-vax/anti-mask/anti-lockdown proponents this last year that they don’t need to trust billionaires or politicians. As a general rule, I don’t trust billionaires or politicians either.

But trust the scientific community and listen to the scientific community.

When there’s a global consensus of expert academics in a particular discipline, supported by the evidence of hundreds of peer reviewed papers assessing billions of related data points, you facking better listen to them.

It applies to all govts. Trump, Biden, Blair, Clinton... the spin, the angle to take, the use of events to one's means. All topped off with the publics focus on celebrities over real meaning of what is going on.

Off on a tangent, the dinner table scene is probably my favourite scene of the year. Superb.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It absolutely does not apply to all governments equally, and that *really, really* matters.

It was a good but very forgettable movie. If you went into it expecting a blockbuster because you saw the cast beforehand you'll have left severely disappointed I'm sure.

It was something a bit different for Leo for sure. Not seen him in many roles like that.

Solid 6 out of 10. Not amazing but by no means a poor film. Won't remember it within 18 months though.

I watched it last night, having read some very negative reviews. I thought it was really good. Didn't need to be subtler or more sophisticated given the premise and central conceit. Actually, I liked it better than Vice, reviews of which set me up with high expectations, but which I found a little too arch and self-satisfied.

It also wasn't trying too hard to be funny but the jokes did hit, e.g. they got a lot of payback from the running gag about White House snacks.

You'd have to be naive to imagine a movie could change the world but I reckon it gave its best shot at demonstrating in an ostensibly non-partisan way the political, media and tech market dynamics undermine science and survival and drive populist compliance ( "Don't look up!" as a slogan chanted by crowds was inspired ).

Sadly that lie has become a decent tool of the most corrupt. Essentially don't even try to hide the corruption, just convince people they have absolutely no choice but to accept it because everyone does it.

As you said there is nothing equal about it. Would be like comparing a serial killer with a kid who stole a few penny sweets
