If you actually watch the film Janie Orlean is a clear caricature of President Trump. The over emotional and angry Kate Dibiasky is a caricature of Greta Thunberg .....

Russian

I understand that but I still feel like these 'inadequate' politicians that you mention get off far too lightly and should also be accountable for the crisis that we're in.

Also, I'm pretty sure the movie was actually filmed before Covid and lockdown. I maybe wrong but pretty sure I read that somewhere.

It was written before Covid, not filmed.

Yes we all know Trump was awful and a total c-nt but a flaw in this film was that it too easily made him and his presidency the issue when it was only part of the problem.

The political world has been ignoring and refusing to work together to deal with climate change long before Trump came to power.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't think the film suggested that a certain type of president was central to the problem. It took aim very much at the infotainment industry, the inadequacy of social media, and the emptiness of the utopian promises of tech billionaires as key components of the ecosystem. Even when it came to Streep's character, it portrayed the political dynamics that incentivised bad decisions: there was a clear logic to inaction. The populist rhetoric had Trumpy echoes but overall I didn't see this as a pastiche of Trumpism.

I'd echo Rosso's earlier point that it's important to distinguish between inadequate political forces within the democratic and reality-based mainstream and actively malign, authoritarian, anti-science forces on the other hand. The former must be criticised, held to account and pushed toward adopting better policies. The latter must be implacably opposed and defeated. The really bad people count on our cynicism to facilitate their grasp on power.

Bang on (and much more eloquently put than I could have!)

That’s why for me it isn’t wholly about climate change. (Some of those involved in creating the movie have said the same.)

That punters are saying the general narrative applies in large part to the COVID-19 situation is telling.

It’s more widely about leveraging for political power and monetising anti-intellectualism and anti-science, and the incredible risks associated with doing so; about the failure of the media to help inform the public; and about an apathetic and distracted public more interested in pop culture than what’s actually happening around them.

The premise would apply at some scale equally to the risks associated with myriad different scenarios: industrial-scale monoculture farming, fresh water misuse, air pollution (kills literally millions worldwide every year), controlling pandemics, pushing prescription opioids on the public, biodiversity loss and colony collapse disorder, etc.

Yeah I agree and that’s been an issue for years and I also agree with you about the difference of someone like Trump to other politicians. While I’m all for laughing at Trump (because he’s a c-nt) I did feel that he was used far too easily to represent the political side with the hats, signs, film title, son in power and affair but then again Trump is just such an easy character to mock. Whereas I felt Rylance’s tech character was a really fun mix of people.

I’m halfway through the series and it’s staggering the outright lies they get away with, not to mention the complicity of the legislator.

Just finished it, good film, though not quite the classic I’d hoped for when reading the synopsis. Leo and Jennifer are both amazing actors and the meteor story is a perfect allegory for climate change

Just finished watching it. Enjoyed it and amused as it digs on both sides of the political spectrum.

Just watched it.

It's well acted and the direction is good but I think as a film it misses its mark. Is it supposed to be a comedy? If so I didn't lol once. Is it supposed to be a satire? Simply having unlikable sociopaths as characters is not satire. Is it a disaster movie? That only forms a minor part of the script really.

I saw a review which called it smug and I'd agree.

As an accompaniment to the movie I also recommend Death to 2021. Not written by Charlie Brooker this time but still very good.

Thought it was a bit meh. Not sure, maybe I was in the wrong mood. Touched on some good points, but didnt think it was sarcastic enough, missed a bit of bite.

Naah. Its just way past your paygrade.

Didn’t think it was great tbh.

It is worrying though how well it depicts modern society and that it doesn’t seem far-fetched that the world will end like this.

Leo Di Caprio has to be the GOAT actor btw. There isn’t a single roll he isn’t perfect at.

If anything, it didn't go far enough to reflect reality.

The president did actually listen to the scientists. There was not a huge division between the look up and don't look up folk.

Speaking of which... That was part of the film that was really confusing... The government were clearly putting out the message the comet was real and would boost the economy... then, all of a sudden, the narrative flipped to the more absurd (and realistic) "Don't look up" where trump like supporters were suddenly acting like they didn't believe in the comet, even though the president's whole message was still that the comet was going to bring jobs. Felt like they tacked that part on, where as it should have been the whole premise and would have been more realistic and funnier.

I think it was more an out of sight, out of mind type situation. Where they were told this comet that they couldn’t see as it was only people really looking for it would see it and the only thing they cared about was the potential money it would bring Americans. Almost like a head in the sand situation and only really when it was too late did they see it coming. Up until that point as far as they were concerned it could very well have been fake or at least something that wasn’t worth all the ‘MSM’ hype.
