Will he pay? Who is going to make him pay? I don't see anyone doing that unless the Russian nationals turn on him.

Could happen.

Pretty much what Putin is banking on....short of a non nuclear WW3 which nobody wants, I don't see sanctions stopping him, he's probably in a better position than Hitler was in 39

Agree with GTW. Only way I can see Putin ‘paying’ for anything is if Russians rise up against him.

And with Russia restricting access to FB and Instagram, whilst presumably influencing the content on Russian based social media platforms, how likely is that to happen?

Germany, Italy and France have so far declined pleas from Ukraine to remove Russia’s access to Swift, due to concerns over how that might affect their own economies.

Putin would’ve no doubt known that would be the case even before he ordered the invasion.

He must feel untouchable right now.

The West need to strangulate the Russian economy. It has to be total and all encompassing.
They should be excluded in all facets of live: sports, finance (Swift Banking System), communications etc.

Russia have spent two decades building an insular economy. That won't be broken with sanctions any Time soon.

Well their citizens won’t be best pleased if they can’t do anything outside of Russia, go bankrupt because if sanctions. Cut them off from everything and they will turn on Putin eventually

ofcourse they won't stop Russia using Swift

bank loan repayment's from Russia are needed by these economies

Russia can survive without Western $$
Europe can not survive without Russian $$

that's the situation

Their biggest intake is oil sales to China and India( cue why both abstained voting in the UN resolution condemning the invasion.) Add to that arms sales to rogue states like Syria.
Other than that their economy is very primordial( grew only 0.22 % last year) .A total blockage will surely hurt the western economies but should compromise Russian economy in five years.

The world needs to turn on Russia right now. No travel to and from. No trade. Stop the banking system - even though it will hurt countries financially. As hash as it may seem all Russian citizens need to be deported back to Russia. All Russian owned assets need to be frozen and nationalised - globally. Then hopefully change will come from within

Agree with all of this but I'm not sure about the deportation thing. You'd be breaking up families and mainly impacting many Russians that probably do not support the invasion of Ukraine IMO.

The Russians at least on the surface appear to be a mediocre fighting force.

Lots of logistical problems such as lack of basics like fuel and food. Lots of inexperienced conscripts fighting and it’s showing, they would have expected to be further down the path to occupation by now.

All credit to the determination of Ukrainians and Zelensky in leading like a hero.

They really are. If the threat of nukes weren’t a thing they would be relatively quickly defeated in a direct war with NATO.

I think ultimately this can only be ended by the Russian people themselves, there does seem to be quite a bit of opposition building in Russia, the people there don’t want to be a pariah state, they want to be part of sporting events and such like.

Although dissent and opposition to Putin in Russia is very dangerous ultimately I think that is what will be needed to end this.

Rabid dogs must be put down.

Ukraine is going to be occupied or have a puppet government installed. They can’t resist Russia in the medium term and NATO, alongside other major world countries, aren’t prepared to do anything more than sanction. Whilst that may well impact Russia, we’re talking years. Maybe even a decade.

The big question is whether Putin will be satisfied with just occupying Ukraine and handling the sanctions or whether his ambitions are larger. Is Ukraine the Czechoslovakia of WW3?

From the statements and rhetoric used by Putin over the last week, I can’t help but feel he’ll attack a NATO Baltic nation. He seems to want conflict. I can’t believe we’re here in 2022 but I think we’re on the path to the war. It’s incredibly sad - I look at my kids and wonder what type of world they’re going to see.

I’m not sure. Ukraine is an ‘easy’ target as no one can really do anything. He stands to gain nothing with a war with NATO. Aside from the nuclear angle, the Russian economy would be absolutely ruined by war with NATO and I just can’t see him doing that simply to bring Latvia or Lithuania into the sphere of influence.
