Ukraine is going to be occupied or have a puppet government installed. They can’t resist Russia in the medium term and NATO, alongside other major world countries, aren’t prepared to do anything more than sanction. Whilst that may well impact Russia, we’re talking years. Maybe even a decade.
The big question is whether Putin will be satisfied with just occupying Ukraine and handling the sanctions or whether his ambitions are larger. Is Ukraine the Czechoslovakia of WW3?
From the statements and rhetoric used by Putin over the last week, I can’t help but feel he’ll attack a NATO Baltic nation. He seems to want conflict. I can’t believe we’re here in 2022 but I think we’re on the path to the war. It’s incredibly sad - I look at my kids and wonder what type of world they’re going to see.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I’m not sure. Ukraine is an ‘easy’ target as no one can really do anything. He stands to gain nothing with a war with NATO. Aside from the nuclear angle, the Russian economy would be absolutely ruined by war with NATO and I just can’t see him doing that simply to bring Latvia or Lithuania into the sphere of influence.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Logically sure. But what does he logically have to gain from Ukraine? It’ll be a slow burn but sanctions will hurt Russia eventually, he’ll need to need huge time and effort keeping occupied populations under control. There’s little benefit that I’m aware of.
My guess would be it’ll come down to whether he believes NATO genuinely has an appetite for war.
Poland has refuse to play Russia is a World Cup Qualifier in March.
Question is why is Russia still even in the competition. FIFA should throw them out immediately!

Agree, if he invades a nato country there will be the inevitable jaw jaw of what we gonna do versus the shuffling of feet when committing numbers and waiting for the US to lead. The Russians have been cheating at all sports for a very long time and have mostly got away with it ! all sporting bodies should ban all Russian sportspeople from competing ,even if their are many decent Russians competing, they must be made to understand that deception, fraud and outright cheating, are not acceptable.
The Americans shouldn't had installed a puppet regime in Ukraine. They with their intelligence agency tried to destabilise Ukraine from the inside which resulted in removing the democratic elected president Yanukovych.
The US puppet regime then tried to be a puppet state for the west on the doorstep of Russia. Russia has every right to defend their interests there. Imagine Mexico electing a pro Russia president who would invite the Russians to build a military bases in Mexico, the Americans would be there in within a day with their military. By the way Russia has 6600 nuclear hypersonic weapons, France for example has 300. This can only resolved peaceful if the west and Russia negotiate a treaty whereby Ukraine will be a neutral state.

This is possibly the biggest pile of dogsh*te I think I have ever read.Putin wants to restore the USSR he is on the record saying that it was the biggest disaster in the 20th century the break up of the Soviet Union. He thinks that the 1st and 2nd world wars were inferior to this .
Putin wants to go down in history as the man who delivered the old style Soviet system to his country.
He has been planning this for years all his work hoarding billions to counter the west’s sanctions and cosying up to the Chinese means we are irrelevant to him.
He has already committed an act of war in Britain with the Novichok poisonings in Salisbury but he doesn’t give a damn .
Unless the west gets its act together quickly we are in for a huge conflict again.
Is there a chance rather than wanting to re-establish the Soviet Union, which seems impossible, that he might just want to ensure Ukraine doesn’t become a NATO member state? The US being able to co-ordinate military bases in neighbouring Ukraine might be a bigger concern to Russia than USSR nostalgia
Russia already have troops in the former soviet state of Kazakhstan helping the government there ,some might say it had already started.Putin knows who he can “assist” without the west intervening ,Ukraine are isolated because they are not NATO affiliated .

There was no fear among those 'at home' at the time so an invasion was therefore necessary.

The Ukraine is a free sovereign state, there is no way that the Russians would get this level of resistance if it was a puppet regime installed by the US - wake up !
Vladimir Putin has gone "all in" here, he regards Ukraine as "Russia's property" and the re-formation of the Soviet Union as his legacy - he can't afford to lose face by just withdrawing.
I don't think this is going to end well, if he stays in power it could even end up with a nuclear war. 👀
