Whenever I see the terminology "tapping up" it always reminds me of Ashley Cole and Chelsea
Morning Edbo, I don`t think their are any rules in football anymore. You only have to look at the way Chelsea are bending every FFP rule going to gain an advantage.
I give up with modern football. It is surely going to implode at some point. I suspect the domestic leagues across Europe will all be wiped out within a decade.
It happens all the time. Clubs only report it if it benefits them.
clubs finding out if a player is interested is completely normal, they would have got permission to enquire
its always been a thing. probelm is people dont know what it actually was.
There is zero that can be done between two people having a conversation.
Its illegal to sign off on and commit to a deal whilst under contract to another club without their permission (outwith bosman deals).
people think that if a player goes to meet a manager/chairman/DOF talks about a deal, talks about what sort of wages they want etc, people think thats tapping up, its not , you cant stop people meeting up and talking. Signing a pre contract however is tapping up

Incorrect. Absolutely meeting up and agreeing on salary etc is seen as tapping up. No idea where you got this nonsense from. Signing a pre contract is nothing to do with tapping up whatsoever.

no its not, you can meet and talk to agents about anything, agreeing and committing to a deal prionr to getting permission from your club is tapping up.
for eg Kane 3 months ago meeting up with Bayern and saying I would like 300k a week if you and tottenham can agree a deal is not tapping up. thats a conversation. signing a contract that says if Spurs and Bayern agree a deal I agree to 300k a week is tapping up.
We were almost reported by Sporting when we tried to tap up Ugarte
I think clubs approach agents rather than the player to avoid directly tapping the player up.
Micky was quoted as saying there was something in his email when asked about us a while back and Ange pretty much admitted we approached the player otherwise we wouldn't have made a bid.
I used to be mates with an agent, he has his own agency now Deadline Day Sports.
Cesare Marchetti, i aint making this up.
what I said is accurate about tapping up.
I would accept 300k a week and move to Bayern if the bid was accepted is not tapping up.

DOF, scouts, approach agents and vice versa, Agents will send out the feelers to all their contacts at clubs to see what interest is out there. Sometimes clubs will bypass the agent and go straight to the player. Fergie was known to personally call players that he could rather than speak to the agent.

its 100% true.
The Premier League states the official definition is: "Subject to Rule T.7, a contracted player, either by himself or by any person on his behalf, shall not either directly or indirectly make any such approach as is referred to in Rule T.5 without having obtained the prior written consent of his club."
Part of the confusion is that it used to be tapping up if you contacted the player before the club but it became so commonplace and actually made sense for clubs to put the feelers out before bidding, they relaxed the definition.

No, you cannot. Although it often isn't punished because the clubs don't report it. If clubs report it, the offenders get punished.
Meeting up with representatives of another club with your own representatives talking about a transfer to another club and your salary etc without permission from your current club, before the 'Bosman Period' is THE very definition of tapping up.
Seriously where did you get this nonsense from? Who told you this?
So re you saying that Kane and the DOF at Bayern couldnt be friends whilst Kane was at Spurs for eg?
If they met for dinner there it would be against the law for them to talk about certain subjects? of course not there is nothing illegal about having a conversation.

no you dont know how to legally interpret that law.
You dont know what "approach" means in the legal sense of this rule.
I wouldn't argue with what the rulebook says but in practice the accepted definition between clubs (because they all do it) seems to be not to raise the issue unless a deal is agreed behind their backs, deals in principle or terms set out and agreed should a deal go ahead seem to be fine.
there is no sporting law that can prevent two people having a conversation.
