I can’t speak for the rest of the world but here in Oz the World Cup was as big here as the men’s World Cup has been in the countries I’ve lived in in the past. Was genuinely a very very positive experience and everyone looked like they had fun and it really feels like the women’s game is evolving into something very big these days. It’ll probably never quite be as popular as the men’s game is globally but it doesn’t really need to be. It just needs to inspire young girls into getting into the game (which it is on a huge scale) and persuade TV companies that there is an audience (again, which there is).

Do we really want to inspire young girls to play football instead of concentrating on gaining a decent career? Instead of studying hard to get into university to study something useful, they'd be wasting time kicking a ball about a park. The women's world cup has done a lot of damage in this sense. I have seen lots of 16 years old who should be studying out playing football instead. It will rot their brains and ruin their futures. I am all for people having a bit of fun and playing what is a game, remember, but if it is being forced upon girls now like it is then it is time for action to stop it.

I have to say that the media reaction in England was very positive throughout even despite us losing the final.

not sure if it's because it's women's football, or because they're proven winners on the back of the euros, or because its fashionable and "good copy" to be positive about women's football, but there's usually a negative side to the men's game even when England reached the final of the euros.

But think of the positives - if they're so busy playing football they have less time to try and get a driving licence. Think of all the lives saved!

OP

To put it bluntly I think women's football is totally rubbish. I never watched a minute of any game even though it was bombarded at us from all angles for the best part of a month.

Every channel on TV were trying to equate it with men"s football, which is a complete nonsense for a starter.

The goalkeeping and defending will always be a comedy show in women’s football

It won't be on par when they have only just become professional. Also, the opportunities for boys at a young age was always much easier for them to get into football, not so for girls. In a sense, females have about 100 years to catch up, not their fault. That's changing and the quality will only get better and better. It's great seeing young girls playing football, if that's what they want to do. Footballs should be for everyone.

Yeah, this is making Sandy look like a dinosaur to be honest. Girls have every right to dream of become professional footballers as boys. Like you say, Bake 'em, the standard isn't the same because the history isn't there.

The only part of the women's game that irks me is that they seem to believe that winning the euros (or nearly winning the WC) somehow erases those 'years of hurt' since 66. That's a total nonsense. The pain and hurt is owned by the mens game and only a male victory can ever heal that pain. Men have their own history just as females have theirs and they shouldn't cross over like that. That said, that's a criticism of the media and general public at large, not the players.

For what it's worth, I'm not a big fan. I watched a couple of the England games but only in the same way I would other sports I'm not that into. It's fine to not follow it but wholeheartedly believe its progress is a good thing. That's where I sit with it.

I have a theory with the following it's currently getting. I get the feeling that it's not really attracting the attention of those that have already nailed their colours to the mast. I've followed the Spurs and England Men's teams since I was a kid so it's very hard to suddenly follow another like that. I think the female game is either followed by women and young girls, or men that don't really have a team. It's attracting the fairweather fan. As far as I'm concerned, it's missing that tribalistic atmosphere you get at most Prem games although with that comes aggression that puts some off I guess. Some of my mates that weren't football fans before were more into this world cup than I was which is why I've got this theory. Could be wrong though.

Nothing against women’s football in fact I do enjoy watching the better teams like Spain , Japan and England.

What gets my gripe is the notion women should now Be paid the same as men when they have only gone global after 5 mins. The men have been grafting for years and their game is well established and the huge profits generated in the game particular in England is due to global brand, popularity and following over the world.

All for equal pay but needs to be fair and rational and not based on the modern day PC.

That's fair enough, not everyone is going to be into it.

You're right that it shouldn't be equated with the mens gain. Men stay down for longer, dive more, and celebrate for longer so the game flows less.

Just cannot get into it mate. What next boys playing netball. Apparently the standard is like under 15s boys levels, so why do they keep saying they want equality with the men`s game, when the product is miles behind it.

I`m happy to be a dinosaur. Just think it is rubbish. Luckily my wife is even more scathing about it. She thinks it`s embarrassing women trying to act like men.

Why are you so bothered about this?

How much do footballers get paid? Think it's worth that for the product?

The final -which was the only match I watched- was actually a pretty good game.

It seems like some people (men) want to hate the women's game just because.

For those who are prepared to give it a chance, I'd just suggest trying to avoid drawing the parallels withe the men's game. Women track and field athletes run slower, jump less, and throw less than the men, but plenty people watch the sport without feeling the urge to mention the bleedin' obvious every two minutes.

In a similar way Rugby does, it is the constant attempts to put men's football down in order to big up women's football.
I've watched a fair bit of Arsenal women as well (even went to some games before it was fashionable)as a few internationals along the way and women play act a lot. They dive, they stay down, they time waste. Seen play acting so bad the player has been banned.

The pay issue I think gets blown out of proportion due to misunderstandings. They don't want same club wages as PL players, they want international fees the same. Which is fair enough - the England men fees go to charity anyway. However, people not involved make themselves look silly by saying club wages should be the same.

Constant attempts to put mens football down. Not true that is it. Women's football is continually being put down though.

As for diving, staying down, etc. Women do it less. That's just a fact.. Just as it's a fact that they're not as good at football as men. You seem to want it both ways.

Thing that I find amazing about the type of comment above is that people continually compare different clubs, different leagues, different competitions, but as soon as someone dares compares women's football to mens all hell breaks loose.

Because they are not comparable and the people who do try to compare are hell bent on discrediting mens football rather than speak of the virtues of the womens game. As you have done here.

Doubt you see people comparing the Premier League to the Ekstraklasa, Eliteserien or even the Eredivisie.

And isn't "all hell breaking loose" because someone (MU52) dared say womens football isn't as good as mens?

Yes, other leagues compare themselves to the premier league all the time you just don't hear about it. And they are comparable, for example league one plays worse football but the tickets are less expensive and it's got a better grassroots atmosphere.

I literally said 2 posts above women's football isn't as good as mens. All hell breaking loose means you stating things like "people constantly putting down mens football" because your masculinity came into question the moment someone said some aspect of Womens football is better than mens.

posted on 21/8/23

Why did you write this article? It was because of the MU52 article, on which "all hell broke loose" when you started abusing him, rather than talk about the virtues of the womens game...

Why not just say whats good about womens football?
