PFA Player of the Season

Aye everyone complaining that there are no decent Scottish strikers. We get one who is the top scorer in the Scottish league and outscoring any England striker in the PL, but people will say he isn't good enough to replace the likes of McBurnie? Simon Murray is everything you want from a Scotland striker.

Think Maeda will win it. McGregor would be a close second for me. Kuhn would have been closer if he didn’t have such a dip in form. Murray has had an excellent season, but isn’t POTY for me.

I read an interesting piece on Kuhn that may explain the sudden dip in form

He had only once played more than 20 games in a season and that was on loan at a lower league. His form was exceptional for us until about that point, maybe slightly later.

Perhaps we shouldn't expect him to suddenly be able to do 40 odd games a season immediately when he hasn't had to ever. I think he is over 40 games for us this season.

I was all for chasing in while we can on him but maybe I was being harsh and judging him on things he has never had to do

Meh,

I think it's way simpler! He's a winger and possibly the most common position for form to be erratic.

Only 4 wingers have ever won it - Provan, McGeady, Laudrup, Forrest out of 47 awards - slim pickings for such an exciting position.

To the Celtic fans, what would Murray have had to do to merit winning it? I don't think anyone would seriously suggest he's the best player in the league, but he's probably made the biggest individual contribution to his club and it's not a stretch to say they'd have been relegated without his goals (still could be right enough).

Murray would have to score 16 goals / 9 assists in the league. Score 4 Champions league goals. Score 7 Scottish Cup goals and 6 League Cup goals.

If he could do that, he'd certainly get my vote.

His problem is that Dundee are still relegation battling. When Higdon won it he drove them to European football.

While Murray has by far been the most influential player at Dundee they are still down there. Yes they may have been relegated without him but for me if we are considering him then we should be looking at Dalby at Dundee Utd. He has been excellent and got them into the 3rd place battle when many possibly considered Utd to maybe get top 6 maybe not. While they are been a team collective they wouldn't be up there wothout Dalby

So Murray has scored the same amount as Maeda whilst being in a relegation battle and potentially keeping his side up, whilst Higdon was playing in a better side going for Europe? Not sure your point. Are you saying that Maeda is worse than relegation standard, playing in a title winning side?

As a winger

Dundee Hibernian are a far better team anyway

I think he would have had to score significantly more goals than anyone else to merit it.

I’m assuming you’re at the wind up as usual, but without checking I don’t think that’s true.

Murray has had an outstanding season by his standards, but the outstanding player of the season for me is Maeda.

Could go on. It appears he gets played as a striker in the big games, probably for his work rate or some other nonsense Sunday league standard reason. Cos he can run about a bit.

Simon Murray does it all, doesn't just run about like a headless chicken.

If there was a PFA runner about of the year award then fair enough, give it to Maeda. But this is about being an actual football player, so should go to Murray.

posted on 30/4/25

Also, just on PFA runner about of the year, Maeda is also at a massive advantage here over Murray.

The Celtic pitch dimensions are 125x80m (10000 meters sq), whereas the Dundee pitch dimensions are 100x68m (6800 meters sq), a whole 3800 meters sq fewer than that available to Maeda to run about in, so Maeda is obviously going to cover more distance, but doesn't necessarily mean he is covering more of the pitch. The PFA runner about of the year should really consider % of pitch covered. So hopefully the voters take this into account.

This is the only real factor to separate the two as they are both on 16 league goals.

The tie breaker as explained above should be % of pitch covered. DO NOT make the mistake of voting for Maeda based just on total distance covered.

Fully appreciate this is a WUM. But what is the precedent here? Has the Balon D’or ever been won by a rank outsider based on relative; Budget, Squad, League Position, Home Pitch Dimensions? 🤣

It’s the “Best” Player. End of.
Maeda every day of the week this season.

posted on 30/4/25

I see it’s Rodgers, David Gray from Hibs and McGlynn of Falkirk up for the manager of the year award.

Gray has done a brilliant job, as has McGlynn even through they’re faltering lately. Rodgers should be favourite.

Let's keep the debate to match days please. I do not care that Maeda goes for a run on Mondays whilst Simon has a chippy. You should not be bringing every day of the week into this, please.

posted on 30/4/25

Also,

Not Ballon D'Or, but yes of course things should be won by doing well at smaller clubs. Especially at a smaller club in the Premiership as you are still competing at the same level as the Old Firm, just with less resources, so you are actually doing better in relative terms.

There is no debating that Simon Murray's 16 Premiership goals are more impressive than Maeda's.

Let's look at manager of the year from lower league clubs for example:

23/24 - John McGlynn
18/19 - Steve Clark
17/18 - Jack Ross
15/16 - Mark Warburton
14/15 - John Hughes
13/14 - Derek McInnes
12/13 - Allan Johnson
11/12 - Derek Adams
10/11 - John McGlynn
07/08 - Billy Reid

John McGlynn should probably win again but Rangers being crap could deservedly get Rodgers the award.

Warburton won it in 2016 for winning the CHAMPIONSHIP with RANGERS.

Fair point, I think a 15 point deduction would be fair and still gives you a chance of staying up.
