The only good thing about him managing England is that it means he’s not managing United
posted 5 days, 11 hours ago
History will treat Southgate kindly.
He got England competing to their proper level and probably above going by the results he had. Two finals, a semi final and a quarter final is much better than any other England manager managed.

Southgate should have stayed for the world cup and then we could have replaced him with an English manager after.

Should have just stuck with another English manager.

The pool for English managers right now is Eddie Howe or Graham Potter. One of them won't want to leave his club and the other has had an awful 24 months before the appointment was made
Until the FA starts encouraging the development of English managers and coaches, the PL will rely on foreign appointments and then you just have a self-eating circle where the only English managers who get to the PL tend to be worn into a rugged style of play that was effective in Leagues 1 and 2 but looks dated in the top division, a la Dyche or Wilder.

Personally I'd still go for an English manager, whether they're crap or not, over the alternative of a foreign one. I don't agree with the idea of someone not of that country managing that country.
We absolutely should work on developing better coaches but to look elsewhere is almost cheating in a way.

Germany would never appoint an English head coach for their national team in a million years. Even if there was one good enough they still wouldn't.
He will be gone next summer after a poor World Cup showing.

The England team has reached the stage that if you don't win either the World Cup or Euros, you will be pretty much seen as a failure. People will say that the style of play etc is important, but ultimately it's about success.
Southgate came very close, but also got pilloried for the way he set up his teams etc, but would have all been forgotten if he had won something - such are the fine margins. And by the end, people couldn't wait to get rid of him.
Being a good club manager does not mean you will be a good international manager - they require a different set of skills, and it did seem very early in Tuchel's career to go into international management and not have the day to day involvement with a club - but managers have egos, and similar to Utd, maybe being the one that brings Eng success is hard to resist.
As for nationality, it wouldn't be difficult to bring in a rule that says managers must be of the same nationality, or have some qualifying rule etc.
But any manager of England is on a hiding to nothing, regardless of nationality.

Anyone who starts Gallagher next to Rice should be automatically sacked. Walker at RB? Shut up. Henderson in the squad? BeIlend. Chalobah next to
Colwill? For England? Again, sackable.
Awful decisions that are all on him.
If he doesnt win the WC or even get to the final at least he's failed. Should have left Gareth there. He was doing well. A good example of how football fans should be careful what they wish for.

But was it not the case that Southgate didn't want to stay and it was also felt that he wasn't getting as much out of the team as he should have - I think he had taken them as far as he could, and he has had a number of chances. I'm not sure international management is generally suited for being a manger for a long time, especially at the highest level. Maybe have 2 or 3 campaigns and then the need to freshen up things etc
It's still early days for Tuchel, but let's face it, it's more likely than a manager will fail than be successful at international level.
Gareth didnt fail. He did well. Best manager weve had apart from Sir Alf. Spain and maybe France are just better than England.
I feel Southgate would’ve stayed on longer were it not for spoilt deluded England fans slating him all the time.
You will literally see some, in fact a lot of, England fans say we have the best squad in world football.
I suspect Southgate would have stayed were it not for the FA caving into the demands of the entitled and ungrateful England fandom.

It depends what your definition of failure is. I'm not English, so don't have an emotional viewpoint - unlike most, it doesn't bother me if England were to win something or not.
In international football, winning trophies trumps how well you are playing etc, that's just the nature of it. And if you are considered to be in the top 2 or 3 nations in the world, then perhaps not in the OTT way the media portray it, but you are looking to win trophies.
Doesn't even matter if you are not considered the best team in the world, because the best teams don't always win. But it becomes a very heavy weight for the manager to carry.
It's not scientific, but you just got the feeling that something was missing with Southgate - so many near misses, maybe he wasn't the one to give you that trophy.
Of course it means Tuchel has a lot to live up to, and he may not be the one either, but a lot will depend on him getting use to the squad and them getting use to him - right at this moment, you can't tell how well he will adapt, or the players also
