I mean as long you're paying taxes, you should be allowed to vote.
There needs to be a retirement age on politicians though. The same as any other industry.
Good point on the politicians.
Absolutely zero way either Biden or Trump should be in power imo. They’re old men who are barely coherent.
My issue with the older vote is parties, particularly the T*ties pandering to them just to get a vote.
The uproar about winter fuel payments was ridiculous, and on top of that, it’s the boomer generation which has ruined us.
I think a maximum age for many things is needed. Particularly driving.
In an age of disinformation and AI it is too easy to target the old on facebook, for example, and they end up voting on something based on outright lies and things that don't exist. So their vote really should be invalid to counter this.
It should be a simple test really, show them a picture of Boris Johnson and ask them if they think this man should have ever have been trusted to become PM.
It they answer yes then send them to the gulag.
I don't think you should stop a certain age from being allowed to vote but something does need to be done to try and readdress the power of the over 65's voting block, and hopefully this change will aid with that.
I think long term the only way that can be done though is to bring in mandatory voting and make GE's a bank holiday.

Fully behind this idea.
You do realise that all of us will become older?? It's not an age thing as such for me - you will get idiots of all ages voting, whether they be 16, 36, 56 or 86 etc.
Just a word on the driving license - there are many silly rules, the main one being everything is self-declaring, so it's up to you to declare if there is a medical issue etc, which is just stupid, because most folk won't admit they shouldn't drive for whatever reason. Any self-regulation system is open to abuse and rarely works in my view.
Going back to the OP, people's voting intentions are crazy, regardless of age - we all vote on matters that may not directly affect us - I don't have kids, but there are issues that affect those that do, so should I not be allowed to vote? I am only in my 50s, but you hear the political views of some people and they can be extreme regardless of age.

Exactly. Put them on an Island, free up housing space, lower the burden of triple lock whilst also decreasing the dependency ratio,
Basically pile them high, Boris would be proud.

When Boris first appeared on Have I got News for you and you told me he was going to be prime minister, I would have never believed you. It really does sum up the crazy society we live in today. The fact that people talk about Farage as possible future PM, that is even worse.

They were stopping 16 and 17 year olds from voting. So should a 17 year old have no voting rights and a 100 year old has full voting rights?
Even 15 year olds vs 100?
People seem to be set on the way things currently are, when the fairest way to look at things is to start from a scenario where nothing currently exists.
"I mean as long you're paying taxes, you should be allowed to vote."
children of any age can get taxed
I don’t think you can disregard age when you simply factor cognitive decline as a starting point.

This eliminates the perceived bias of "taking away".
There’s pensioners with the same cognitive abilities of children under 12.
And many will have worse.
Age related cognitive decline can literally be measured and you’re also pretty lucky if it’s not affected you by the age of 70+.
It’s a real issue imo, and yet goes completely unchecked.
Look at Trump today, bumbling around saying Biden shouldn’t have been never have nominated Powell when it was actually himself.
Aside if laughable, this borderline senile old fella has the launch codes.

There are a large percentage with cognitive abilities of a slug. Even pre birth human levels of cognitive abilities. Newborns are aware of their surroundings and can cry for help to be fed etc. Whereas a lot of older people wouldn't survive if the care workers didn't automatically feed them.
Unfortunately there are a high number of people with dementia and this will only get worse.
If in a few years, 20% of boomers have compromised cognitive abilities then they are still affecting election results massively due to the size of that generation.
Amusing that I had a cognitive breakdown in my own post there

Just to say, and I detest the fat fraud as much as the next person, but this question should be asked of the general electorate of the USA ,not this football forum in Britain !
Just consider that you have to talk to MOST over 80s like they are a 5 year old.....
