If any one candidate will be strong enough to not invoke article 50, it's May.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Tory membership will not vote for her then
-----------------------------
Depends what the Tory memberships views are on the Brexit doesn't it?

So much for democracy when 150,000 members can choose the next PM and promote his/her policies to the highest level.

On the figures polled it's a straight shootout between Johnson and May.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We'll see what the Tory MPs do, but I'd be a little surprised if they served the Party Membership up with anything other than a choice between Johnson and May.

If they do that, I'd expect a Boris victory on the grounds of a) his role in the Leave campaign and commitment to an exit (May might have been relatively quiet, but she sided with Remain), and b) Boris's relative electability.

That said, it's not out of the question that Boris falters and we end up seeing May vs Crabb. All depends which MPs round behind Boris really. Can't see Hunt or <shudder> Fox getting past the first round of voting, at best.

That has been true in the last couple of decades, but I think the Tory MPs and Party will be thinking hard about both Europe and electability this time around.

Wowzers.

Forecasts stating economic growth next year to be 2.2% lower than previous forecast.

That's a reduction in growth amounting to £350m... every few days, never mind a week

This is why people don't see Boris coming. He makes them think he isn't intelligent.

That is their mistake, because he is very clever indeed.

Just looked at demographics of the Party memberships - interesting reading.

The average age of the more than 200,000 (and growing) Labour Party members is now 42.

The *average* age of the now likely fewer than 100,000 (and falling) Conservative Party members is thought to be between 59 and 68

The exact figures for the Tories are unknown as they've stopped publishing information about the size and demographics of their membership.

If he was that intelligent he would have had a plan of how to lead a Brexit to boost his leadership bid.

Crabb second behind Boris on being in touch with the concerns of the ordinary people?! Clearly Tory party members have never had to try and claim benefits lately...

He's a very clever politician indeed, I'll give him that.

He manages to hide his elitism very well, is pretty nimble - a populist and pragmatist, and has a way with the media and public.

If I were a right wing ideologue (which I certainly ain't!) he'd be the no-brainer choice for me.

Currently not far off 5 million people are reliant on Housing Benefit whilst rental prices skyrocket and tens of thousands of flats lie empty across metropolitan areas.

3 million people rely on Disability Living Allowance.

2.5 million people rely on Employment and Support Allowance. Many of these are temporary and permanent employees with low wage, limited hours contracts.

These are just the top three benefits (leaving the 12 million or so drawing state pensions aside).

In short, many millions of ordinary people are absolutely reliant on benefits to survive.

There are more than 80,000 empty habitable residential properties in London alone.

And we have thousands of homeless people on the streets. That, my friends, is a fecking crime.

#4za and rosso have both touched on what I'm try to get at. My best mate's bro has autism which requires 24hr supervision and the amount of hoops he has to jump through to get PIP is ludicrous, particularly given the amount of people the government is employing checking up on it all. IDS was and now Crabb is hell bent on making claiming difficult to the point people just give up when the figures involved are dwarfed by legal tax avoidance by the wealthy.

It's very dumb owners, but I don't see any relationship between not letting a privately owned property and homelessness.

If they let the properties the homeless would still have no home.

Total benefits and tax credit fraud is estimated at c. £1.6bn per annum. This is less than 1% of total benefits and tax credit expenditure.

Total estimated cost of tax evasion is £70bn per annum. Total estimated cost of tax avoidance is £25bn per annum.

But of course it's the benefit fraudsters we should be focussing on.
