Apologising for the nonsense written and or misinterpreted in ancient books that are still causing trouble/delusion to this day is facking annoying.
Sadly both the right and left do this. The American and British right tend to be religious themselves while typically people leaning strongly to the left in these countries are too overly accepting to call the religious out on the their BS.
It does seem somewhat hypocritical to mention the need for facts, science and evidence yet support a place for religion in modern thinking/society.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
People are entitled to believe what they want to believe. They are also entitled to act as they see fit in accordance with those beliefs.
When those beliefs translate to actions and those actions restrict the freedoms or impact the rights of others, that's where the line comes.
This is the problem with bringing religion into politics and into law. Human and civil rights should be absolute; not religious doctrine.

I totally agree with you there, but law has been brought about from religion. Does not matter which country you are at, the center of all law is religion. Just look at holidays. Whether you believe in a religion or not has no relevance but the law is made up of it.
I would argue that the centre of all religion is law.
Religion is simply formed around concepts and traditions people have already established. There are numerous examples, and they are still being created today.

Take feminist women, you won't see them cmapaigning against Saudi Ariba yet they'll complain about man spreading on the underground
This stuff just damages the liberal left's reputation and makes them a laughing stock in many ways.

Yes, it is condemning the treatment of women but is full of nonsense and religious propaganda that has no factual evidence behind it. Many of these cultural practices stem from religious beliefs.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
As did the Inquisition, the Crusades, the ritual slaughter of the Burmese by Buddhists, the witch hunts, the Bartholomew's Day Massacre, the Pogroms in Russia and Germany...
I am no fan of organised religion, in part because it has allowed centuries-old works of fiction to be twisted and manipulated to support the control of people.
But your point was that "things like this [have] given the left a bad rep and is making them disliked," referring to an article that condemns the mistreatment of women in modern-day autocratic Islamic regimes.
If an article, which actually tries to bring some context and evidence, works to persuade people that that under their Islamic beliefs they have an obligation to ensure the fair treatment of women, I fail to see how that's a negative.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think it's a negative because it's a distortion of the truth. I care about the facts first and foremost. The left can’t take a moral high ground in regards to telling the facts if they are willing to distort them just in order to be politically correct. I understand many in the left would also discredit articles such as this but similar articles can be found all across the left wing media.
Am I correct in thinking that you are saying we should condemn all religion because some religious people are assh0les?

I think we need to be truthful in regards to them and not try to sugarcoat things. None are based on any factual evidence and all contain potetially harmful material which we need to be honest about. Trying to ignore this will just lead to further problems rather than solve them.
The left are often quite critical of Christianity, yet tend to ignore the damage caused by other, non-Western religions, partly because they don't won't to appear racist. This sort of mentality isn't going to solve anything.

Am I correct in thinking that you are saying we should condemn all religion because some religious people are assh0les?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think we need to be truthful in regards to them and not try to sugarcoat things.

<ok? and because they are scared of the other religions

Sorry Sniper, but that is a lot of nonsense. I see no harm in any religion at all, I do see harm in some people - and some of those people are religious. That's it.

Why do people keep complaining about being blindly branded a racist/xenophobe/homophobe and then in almost the same breath they condemn everyone they consider on 'the left' as the same? Everyone's a fecking hyprocrite, KR. Everyone.

Agree but I've stated its a segment of the far liberal left that I've an issue with

Offer up some debate and we'll see, it'd make a nice change.
