My definition of world class is a bit broad. Anyone who could be considered/argued to be the top 5-6 in their position in the world, or any player who you could picture starting and being a key player for most of the top, elite teams in Europe.

I don’t really like the definition of world class being ‘whoever makes a world XI’ or ‘top 2 in each position’ as you could have three right-backs all performing at the same world class level but apparently only one or two can be world class by these definitions. Maybe I’m being over pedantic and others don’t take it that literally but hey this whole thread has basically turned into the classic debate of the ‘world class’ definition.

World class PL players:

City: Laporte, KDB, Aguero. Sterling, Ederson borderline
Liverpool: Allison, TAA, VVD, Robertson, Salah, Mane
Chelsea: Kante at his best but imo he has not been at his best since Conte.
Arsenal: Aubameyang
United: -
Spurs: Kane

Where does Borderline play?

Other borderline ones I thought about were Son and Firmino.

If we were to go a bit niche and try and rank the top ‘defensive full backs’ in Europe, Azpi and AWB I think would be top/near top of both lists. And Azpi has had some genuine world class seasons for us (14/15 and 16/17).

I was thinking a similar thing for Firmino. He would be near a top 4-5 list of best strikers but he would be in a list of best false 9s, or however else you can describe his role.

*wouldn’t be near

Borderline, erm means what it means I guess, players who I thought are very close to world class but I guess just hesitant for one reason or other to fully classify them as such

Sterling world class? 🤣😂😭

Atleast it makes sense now why some of you think Aubameyang is World Class.

Even if you disagree, I don’t think it’s unreasonable that others by their own parameters may consider Sterling/Aubameyang world class. It’s hardly a ridiculous opinion to have.

I watched the games of Leganes, Alaves yesterday and they were very very poor teams. You need to watch La Liga more if you want to judge the quality of their players. Bournemouth will be relegated but still have dangerous quick players like Wilson.

Without wishing to get into a debate about the quality -or lack thereof- of the league, this is a pretty weird basis on which to support your view.

Sterling has performed at a consistently high standard for 3 seasons now. 1 in 2 goal rate last 3 seasons for a winger. When you think about what City have done in that time I think he deserves to be called world class.

118 goals+assists in 145 appearances over the last 3 seasons

He's probably one of the more borderline ones but it's not laughable

Personally I choose to define world class as anyone who would get into the ‘world squad’ ie top 2 of any given position.

For example rewind a few years ago with Neuer & De Gea both were world class and it would be unfair to use starting world XI as one of them would miss out when they were clearly both world class.

I think using 2 is good for keeping it truly at world class level rather than top 5 in any given position.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What if there are 3 really top players then in the same position?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think he is saying that Paul Scholes wasn't world class.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You could take most eras and use that criteria and I'm sure some really top players would miss out.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah some really top players would miss out but you have to set some limits to it and I’ve set mine.

I’d say...

De Bruyne
Kante
Pogba

Are all world class midfielders.

VVD, Tierney, maybe TAA world class defenders.

Don’t think there are any world class forwards in the PL atm tbh. Auba is the closest, followed by Mo Salah. Pepe will get there.

But the only world class forwards atm are; Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar, Mbappe & Lewandowksi.

Just limit it to the players you think are world class. Simple.

I don't know why people feel the need to limit it to a top XI or top 2 best in their position. There are always going to be quality players around who you won't fit in that way.

Lots of the players are being mentioned on the back of one half decent season (Pereira). Others (TAA and Robertson etc) are patently not WORLD class. There are lots of very good players in the premier league but not many are top, top TOP players season in season out. When people mention Scholes, the man did it over a decade, every year. Pogba doesn't even do it for his girlfriend. Lots of these players have world class reputations but are not world class performers.

The reason why I do that is that simply using ‘world class’ is how are you defining that if there are no limits? You will have limits to define world class, they just differ to my limits. I think that having the top 2 suits and if there’s a 3rd that doesn’t quite cut it then at that moment or era then they’re not world class.

I don’t buy into this top 5 in your position makes you world class garbage.

A world class player should be a seriously talented footballer who can win matches on his own. I would agree with all the players on the OP’s list except for Silva (only coz he’s winding down) and Kante because of his injuries.

Name better players in their position than TAA and Robertson.
