Poor Performance, Good Result

On paper the hardest league game of the season. Came early and I think don’t think many of us predicted much other than a defeat.

The line up was baffling to me - said before the game that line up would struggle to get out of its own half and Kane would be isolated on the halfway line , and that Moura should start. And so it proved. If a no-mark like me can see that why didn’t Poch and the coaching team? We offered virtually nothing, just frantically defending in our own half as we had no outlet. In fairness we battled well, but we put ourselves in a position where all we could offer was a battling performance. When Lucas came on we at least had a runner past Kane who could stretch them a bit, and stop them pressing us so high up the pitch.

Also, our inability to play the ball out of defence and past the halfway line was infuriating and I lost count of the amount of times it gave them a goal scoring opportunity. Sometimes you have to be pragmatic - we weren’t coping with their press so should’ve gone more direct earlier on.

The Vertonghen issue is also a big concern. We were already missing two of our best players in Dele and Son through reasons we can’t control - so to be missing another in questionable circumstances hurts us even more. Jan is a calm head on the ball at the back which we really needed. More worrying that Poch said we need the Euro window to close to focus certain players heads.

I struggle to find any real positives other than the battling attitude of the players and the actual result. But with Son, Dele and Vert coming back and Ndombele and GLC bedding in I think we will only improve. Lamela’s corners were decent.

You look at their team and bench options and it’s so hard to look past them for the title, although Liverpool fans will be pleased with the result today. One thing to say to anyone saying VAR has been kind to us - no, VAR has ruled out a goal by the letter of the current handball rule - 100% correct decision. They shoulda had a pen first half though. Though we were poor you did feel they might rue those missed chances. Last ten minutes I thought they were looking a bit leggy and we might nick it, til the VAR drama.

4 points on the board; need a more positive set up vs Newcastle and would like to see GLC get his full debut.

I think Aurier needs to be given chance if he can stay fit.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Agree.
But he needs a good sports psychiatrist to get his head straight.
I seem to remember the club hired one a short while back?

YUP.. KWP is simply not good enough.
This game made me wish we still had Walker!
However ......
does anyone understand replacing Eriksen by Skip in minute 91?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You're gonna write him off because he struggled against man city?

Literally never been given a run of games ffs
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Motd just highlighted why he had a few bad moments. Lack of cover runs from the midfield meaning he had to try and cover two players
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If it was cover at the game's end ... Vertonghen was on the bench. So why Skip?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You’ve literally just listed two totally different players
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We're talking "COVER" or someone was.
In other words, if you want to defend a 2-2 situation for 4 minutes, you bring on a player who has done that for years.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don’t bring on anyone
----------------------------------------------------------------------
EXACTLY!

Near the end Kwp looked like he was getting light headed. Think Aurier should be ahead of him thou
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Aurier wouldn’t even be my second or third choice.

I can accept mistakes from a 22 year old but I cannot accept the mistakes a 26 year old Aurier makes game after game
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This

KWP is inexperienced - aurier is bad defensively.

i'm not being funny but

we always had a tag of going up north and rolling over

i've seen some really chit teams but i'm amazed that some are moaning despite what's happened over the last few seasons

lets have it right none of us started supporting spurs to be glory hunters

we were lucky today to come away with a draw but we were behind twice and fought back against the best team in the league to get that point

be glad for the shape we're in

I think a lot of the issues were caused by the quality of City. We definitely could have managed better with the ball but really we are dealing with one of the great teams of our time. They are better than us, and even if we won the league narrowly over them I would still say they're better than us.

Delighted with the result, and now we need to keep an unbeaten run going and build confidence. This is what all the top teams do. It's what we were supposed to do last season but every winning run quickly came to a blunt end, often to teams we took the lead against. If we're the top, title challenging team we want to be then there's no reason we should be losing a game at least until Liverpool away.

I think we've also forgotten what it looks like when you're bedding in key players

A simple but really good and relevant point imo

Currently the whole of Spurs defence is bad defensively so Aurier will fit in OK.

Arsenal will beat us in a couple of weeks time. Spurs still haven't won an away Prem game in 2019.
