Never hear anyone moaning about Alexander the Great who ruled the biggest empire in the world at the age of 25

Um, I think there were probably a few grumblings about Alexander in Asia Minor

i had similar concerns to yours regarding the olympic ceremony, which you may have seen me discussing with PP , A1 and others on the olympic thread. tbh I can kind of understand that it would have been difficult to do much on the Empire due to the overwhelming predisposition the world has for being offended by it. still sad as you say though.

Yeah, I complained about one of that muppet's posts because it was a historical lie (recognised across the whole world except by certain extremists) and a dangerous one too, I thought. I know the admins tried to shut that discussion down, and I don't blame them at all (I would have!) but that nutter was posting some bizarre historical 'fact' and seemingly getting away with it.

I'm very down on this recent generation of British politicians and decision-makers. It's all apologies to the rest of the world for our mistakes. I don't see any thanks coming back for the great, great things we did also, does anyone else??!

I think it was right that the industrial revolution featured at the opening ceremony. But if you're going to base an hour (? - just estimating/guessing there) entirely on history then you have to do just that - base it on history. Not just whitewash the non-PC parts.

It was good to see Churchill though, and the Dambusters theme got a good airing - two fingers up to the PC brigade (They should have played it as the Germans walked in JOKE!!)

Don't think so, but 'defamatory' is I think. It's hard to be any more defamatory than lying through your teeth about a whole empire

I have travelled to many corners of this world, and just about whenever I've been recognised as British I have (purely for the actions of our forbears) been greeted like a hero (which I am not of course). I think that says it all

Not sure why we had 20 minutes of rap music that originated in America

The world would of love the NHS anyway without it being in the show, they all come and use it for free

JPB ..Crcking thread, possibly the most interesting "off topic" thread i have read on here.

The reason our empire was more benevolent was due to its reason for being - Trade, its what we do, and what we have always done.

Also, Arguably the greatest legacy we have given the world is manufacturing industry, its what drives the planet, we took the world kicking and screaming into the modern era, lets stop apologising to countries who feel we have wronged them, and lets hear some gratitude, also i wonder when Italy will apologise to us for slaving our people during the times of the roman empire

On saying that, we performed some atrocities on some races of people, the tasmanian aboriginals for one, but as a whole, I believe we have served the world well.

5 stars for an outstanding article mate
