The problem with history is that there is so bloody much of it We didn't really get taught much about the British Empire. A little on slavery, but apartheid was covered in Religious Education...

It's a little bit more difficult to do so when the materials required in manufacturing are found in countries outside of your sphere.
The reason for our industrial boom was the resources we could take from all over the world on the cheap, that's not possible now.

Repeat until the British Empire is fabulously rich.

My wifes visa specifically states "no recourse to public funds". She's not allowed a penny. I work and pay taxes. The rules are the rules, we don't have any issue with this. I'm sure you can understand what I do have a problem with though.
----------------------------------
Exactly. People who come on a visa, not through the EU aren't entitled to benefits anyhow. It's the EU law people shoul dhave issue with, not UK immigration laws. If only they knew a bit about the subject and weren't so ignorant, yet loud about it.

"It's folly to think that an open-door policy on immigration is a good thing"

It's hilarious that people think this is the case. Immigration into this country is extremely difficult. I've been up close and personal to it. I used to be ignorant to it also and think it was a gift to come here but in actual fact, it's extremely difficult.

To come here, there are many factors you have to pass. Firstly, are you a skilled worker in which the UK is in short supply of? If not, you've no chance, unless you're an entrepreneur or have a family member who is a citizen. Getting married to a citizen is a straight foward route, a gift? Wrong again. You have to prove that each of you are working and have enough funds to support the two of you, you have to have enough disposable income.

Immigration to the UK is very difficult. What people should be complaining about is the EU law, the EU Directive in which grants equal rights to all citizens of the EU to live and work within any country in the EU. And that extends to their partner and thus an citizen of an EU country can take their partner to the UK, regardless of where the partner is from. People like to talk but very few actually know what they're talking about.

-----------------

Why would you assume I'm talking about non-EU immigration?

Yeah, I think anyone who is complaining about open door immigration is talking specifically about EU immigration policies.

It does prove that we don't get anywhere close to a comprehensive education of our nation whilst at school. Almost my entire school life was based around women's votes and the 2 world wars.
------------------------------------
This is true. All my history lessons were the World Wars, Korean wars, Romans, Vikings, Normans, the Irish famine, Devolution, treaties etc etc. Not once did I learn about any actual history of the UK, not including wars.

Although the laws I learnt as soon as I was an adminstrator as I had to follow a lot of them.

Questions like, 'how many under 16 year olds are in the UK? 14m, 15m, 16m or 17m?' isn't really history or relevant to anything, all it does is make sure you study the book well.

Benefit fraud last year, was 0.7% of total benefit expenditure, according to the DWP's official estimates. This totalled £1.2bn over the year. Nor is fraud getting worse – even against a background of benefit cuts and long-term unemployment fraud made up a smaller share of the welfare bill last year than it did in 2010/11 or 2009/10.

So nothing like £4.2billion then, still it would pay for almost 20% of one of the pointless aircraft carriers we are building.

You quoted me. I ask again - why did you assume I meant non-EU immigration?

The most open door immigration policy is the one within the EU. Completely unfettered.

Free market principle on immigration, but with a very left-wing benefit system. Do the math

I am no great fan of Alastair Campbell, but this seems a balanced view on the debate on Mrs Thatcher's death. Worth a read if you have time.

"Do the math"

It's maths with "s" at the end, bloody American words coming over here taking our words jobs. I blame the last and every other Labour government ever.

"Do the maths" isn't a phrase the British traditionally use, so I think the American spelling is more apt
